Unknown spice

I'm looking for turmeric and there is an unmarked bag in the spice cupboard of yellowish orangish powder. I think it might be that because I was told that we might have it, and nothing else is labeled turmeric and it kind of looks the color that the internet tells me.

Think I should just go for it and use it? I've never had it before, so if I tasted it to find out, what would it taste like?

Earthy and a little bitter, but if its an old pack of spice, this can fade with time.

Nope, doesn't taste like that. Thanks for helping me not ruin dinner! :D
Well it tasted like it just a little at the beginning, but then it got really really spicy and hot!

Just from the colour it could be maybe saffron (but not that likely). Does the taste remind you a bit of curry? It might be curcuma then.

A whole bag of saffron? Isn't it really expensive?

Very much so, and saffron is usually in strands.

Turmeric isn't really hot, as such. Might of been some form of yellow chilli powder

The spice owner finally got home and apperantly it was some kind of curry powder. I've never had anything curry before, so I couldn't have guessed from the taste. Though I can bet that I won't be eating it if ever given the oppertunity now :p
