Soap

littlemissylittlemissy Posts: 9,972 Supreme Poster
Yay for making things! I tried making soap and I am dead chuffed with the results :D

w00t.

I have to admit, I had to whisk the damn mixture for an hour (yup, one whole hour!) and my arm hurt afterwards, but so far so good.

Now need to wait 6-8 weeks before I can try it to see the final results ...

Not being knowledgable about soap making, why the 6-8 weeks?

Also, can you make some for me :)

Because there is caustic soda in soap and it needs to dissolve so that it isn't harmful on your skin :)

Please can you give me the link/name of the book that you got the recipe (is recipe the right word?) from? I sometimes end up buying soap that looks just like that but with ribbon on for presents if I'm desperate, and it would be so much nicer to make my own!

Yours look so nice and pretty!

Ooo. For some reason I thought it just had to dry out or something. Interesting!

That's why I decided to give it a go! I used this recipe that Kirstie Alsopp used in one of her tv programmes. I followed it quite closely and instead of the coconut oil i used the vegetable fat.

Manda, they do need to dry out now. I can't use them for a while or anything and will dry out more in the next few weeks.

The honey and almond one looks weird because it was in a flat container so i'll have to cut it differently. I didn't have enough loaf tins! I want to make some more soon - maybe cupcake shaped :D

Thank you! (Guess what the fam's getting for Christmas? :p)

Where did you get the caustic soda and vegetable fat from?

Boots sell caustic soda and I've seen veg fat in Tesco. Don't know about ASDA, can't find anything in that place.

e: Just found this site, http://www.soap-making-resource.com/essential-oils-for-soap-making.html - think I might try this at some point. :)

I got the caustic soda from boots (as per the poster below me!). Asda sell vegetable fat called trex and tesco have cookeen. I used the cookeen because tesco is my closest shop.

It's really straightforward to make, just time consuming.
