Is marketing evil?

Is marketing something evil and the tool of Satan?

Marketing consists, in part, of the following elements:

- Market segmentation - splitting consumers into groups of like needs/wants
- Marketing planning - drawing up a plan of how to market a product
- Marketing research - using statistics to determine what people are willing and able to buy
- Services marketing - the marketing of services as opposed to goods
- New Product Development - devising new products to release onto the market

You can do further research on Wikipedia if you don't know if any of these terms mean, but i don't see how any of those are evil.

Perhaps the most evil part of marketing is marketing communications, which is how a firm promotes its products. But even then, not all advertising is misleading. I saw an Intel processor advert earlier today, most of their adverts have never been misleading.

So, since marketing is about how to satisfy needs/wants and do so better than the competition, how is that morally bad? A firm owner needs to ensure that there is a demand for his/her product.

No such thing as Satan, for a start. And, let's define evil.

It's a common belief that marketing is evil, and I didn't mention with respect to him existing.

I think there is no proof that morality is relative, even though I think it is.

Marketing pooned me in the ass and didn't even have the goddamn common courtesy to give me a reach-around.

At least I think that's how the quote goes...

    Evidence?

Surely it depends on what you are marketing.

Not as evil as marketing Justin Bieber.

    Is marketing fast food evil?

Companies know there is a demand for cigarettes, so they produce in response to that.

Kira, any chance of the evidence I asked about, when you claimed that it's a common belief that "marketing is evil"...
