are you selective with whom you associate?

I often find that if somebody turns out to be a bad or unwholesome person, I turn to despise them and harass them.

Is this being too selective?

Being selective about who you are friends with doesn't have anything to do with harassing somebody. That is a whole different issue. Selective is fine, nobody has to like everybody... harassing somebody for any reason is not ok, ever.

'Unwholesome' - What does this really mean with regards to people?

I just avoid people I don't like. Harassing them is just troublesome and requires work. If someone is stupid in a deluded sense however, you can have an argument with them, but just treating them bad, because you are not on one wavelength is just harmful and negative to the both of you (harasser and harassee)

I believe that who you surround yourself with is a central element of who you are and who you become. As a result, I try to make sure that the people in my life nourish me in some way; they provide something of value to me and I to them, whether that be laughter, wisdom, support, quiet, whatever. If someone doesn't nourish me and help me to grow as a person, I feel like time spent with them is wasted time, harsh as it may sound, and I don't do it.

You harass people? Well, aren't you a peach :eek2:.

To answer the question, yes, I am very selective. I get very bored of people very quickly, so I try and only associate with people who would keep me entertained for longer. If people bore me fast enough, I avoid them as much as possible. There are very few people who that hasn't happened with, so I tend to keep them around.

Am I selective about who I associate with? Of course. Isn't everybody?

Do I despise and harass the people I don't like enough to associate with? No, obviously not. That's bordering on sociopathic.

I'm not saying you're a sociopath kira, as I doubt you actually do harass the people you dislike. But if you did, it would be unacceptable and suggest some sort of mental imbalance.

Make an effort to get on with people you have to be around, like work colleagues, but you don't have to 'despise' or 'harass' bad people, so much as cut contact with them. It's not like anyone is making you associate with them.

    Why what?

Are you claiming not to understand why harassing people you don't like is wrong?

Because I don't believe you. You know perfectly well why it is wrong, and I most certainly can't be arsed to go round in circles trying to explain it to you.

I don't have much experience in psychology, so this I am asking. I want to know what the rationale behind it is.

i'm also asking since normality can be socially constructed and is not biological.

I'm selective in whom I associate with. I call that group of people "friends".

I know, it's a novel approach but it seems to work for me.

That will depend on you're likes and dislikes.

Not sure I can give you names or anything.

Ok. I personally think the idea of better/lesser is relative, but that's by the by.

It's not being selective, it's going down to their level.

We're not going to get along with everybody we meet in life.

    Live and let live.
