apprenticeship for a graduate?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I just emailed a training provider that advertises apprenticeships (those earn while you learn things) for 16-24 year olds. I'm really expecting a skeptical reply and being told I'm too over qualified to complete an NVQ. The thing is, I can see an apprenticeship being really good for me. I have zilcho paid work experience, no confidence (i make a dick out of myself at interviews, visibly sweating and blushing and stuttering). rightly or wrongly an apprenticeship feels 'safe' for me and i think that i'd really enjoy it.

i know that the pay isnt good but i dont really need much money because im living at home. just getting paid a tiny bit for a 9-5 job would be a huge confience boost for me. i feel that the things that are against me are (with a few counter arguements)... :

- being a graduate (but i am so so prepared to work from the bottom up, an nvq2 is no way beneath me and i would gain so much from it)

- my age (23), although on the website it did say 16-24 year olds but im aware the focus will be on the school leavers.

and also.. something i should probably keep stchum about. i was enrolled on a modern apprenticeship when i was around 17 for business administration. i messed it up because of a lot of problematic things going on in my personal life. i can see that i might be seen as a drop out and a waster but i was 17 and well.. maybe i wouldnt have gone to uni otherwise?

im just a bit anxious that no training provider will want me. if they dont it seems sad because i feel like i cant go forward, and in a sense i cant even go back. stuck.

i dont know what im even asking. my mum is watching the footie so i cant rant to her about this :p

    Hi Mate,

It seems your like one of the many students who now graduate, they don't have that experience to get them on the career ladder.

Having read your post, I am glad your are skeptical with regard to the apprenticeship because I don't think its a case of being over qualified what it comes down to is funding thats why they have an age range of 16-24yr olds.

I myself have tried this route just to get some work experience but the centre rejected me because I was not suitable for the program and they could not guarentee funding.

Have you tried the governments graduate talent website where a lot of companies offer placements for 3-6 months ?

As for building your confidence try getting involved in some local schemes or volunteer to help you socialise and keep active. You should look forward you have a degree which is more than some people have.....

But overall mate I wish you all the best and I hope you find something suitable....
