    Heya

Your parents don't have to be in the room! Maybe they could wait with you in the waiting room and then you could go in by yourself? Or if not, they could come in to start off with and then maybe leave you to it?

    All the best with it

Okay, so say someone was goin to the doctors with their step-mom about self harm and an eating disorder (probs ednos) that ivolved vomiting but not enought to be bulimia. say they used to self harm on arms and tummy and now self harmed on their legs, had been self harming for 3 years. im assuming they would be sent to a mental health service?
would they get weighed and stuff and would they have to show old scars even if there are no fresh cuts?
anyone have any eperience of going to the doctors about eating disorders or self harm?
    please it would really help
    thanks
(this is for my friend who wants to remain annonymous)

    Hi Lemon,

Sorry to hear that you and your friend are going through such a tough time at the moment. Seems that you are both going through a similar experience. If you are under 16 years old, then your parents have rights. If you are over 16 then you are entitled to confidential advice from your GP. That means you have a right to see the GP alone. This information may help?

This page is also really worth reading as it says what you can expect from seeing your GP about self-harm. There are some really good related articles and even a video to watch. The Doctor is there to help you and they might want to refer you to CAMHS or other specialist support services, they might also want to see your injuries - but this is only so that they can assess you properly and get the right kind of help for you.

You could call someone at MIND for more information, or Childline if you wanted to talk things through? These will be private calls and your parents do not need to know you have called.

As you said in your first post, this can be really scarey and you and your friend are really brave to be going to see your GP's. As has been said above too - the best bet is to be as honest as you can, so that the Doctor can get the right help for you.

Keep posting to let us know how you get on and to carry on exploring how you are feeling. Take care :)

I have always been able to refuse to show injuries / be weighed if I needed to, except in A&E. Good luck to your friend.

Mention to the doctor that you don't want your parents to be there and if you're over 16 (or if you're under and have, in the doctors opinion, reached sufficient maturity to understand what is going on) they will be obliged to ask your parents to leave and they won't have a choice.

Once you are 16 or have reached suifficeint maturity (in the opinion of the doctor) to understand what's going on then you are entitled to a confidential conversation with your GP.

When I was in counselling when I was little, like seven or something, my parents didn't have to come if I didn't want them to, but when I was about fourteen or something and had to go back, they made my parents stay in with me. I didn't want to say anything in front of them, and so the counsellor just said it was a bit of a pointless exercise. I wish I'd made more of a fuss to get counselling without my parents being there, because I imagine I'd've got better then. Oh well, it's too late for me now, but once you're in the room with the doctor and your parents and have had an initial talk together, ask if your parents can leave so you can talk confidentially. I see no reason why the doctor would not allow this, as you seem to understand what is going on.

That information sheet probably needs correcting with references to Gillick competencies.

Effectively anyone, of any age, can have confidential advice and give consent, if the doctor believes that they can understand the implications.

The doctor will be more worried about you, what you say and what is in your best interests. Chances re that they will ignore your parents until it comes to discussion treatment/referral options.

I do know that it's not going to be easy for you but you need to speak your mind and not worry that your parents are in the room with you. This is your chance to get the help you apparently want...

You could write a few things down and hand it to the Dr, that way your parents won't hear what you have to say?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Yeah thats a good idea, thanks.

Perhpas think of a few bullet points, outlining each issue - that will be easier and quicker to read than full sentances in a mini essay. Something like:

I would like some help because:

I self-harm - I cut myself with scissors (3?) times a week. My cuts might need looking at.
I have distressing thoughts about hurting myself.
I cry a lot and don't won't to go out into social situations.

etc. Obviously just put the things that you are suffering with, those are just examples

Oh, God. I understand. Trust me, I do.

Recently, I found myself in the doctors office, too. I had been there before. At thirteen, my mother took me to the doctor because I was depressed and had been depending on self-mutilation. Then, the doctor had offered counselling. I had refused, being stubborn. Over a year later, my mother has taken me there again. This time, the doctor is much more worried. As I decided to be ignorant and stubborn and sit in the corner, my mother sat by the doctor and explained. How being around people gave me panic attacks. How I had become more and more depressed. How I had been having suicidal thoughts. How I had been cutting, again. How I had been paranoid. How I had been not eating. And how, and I must say that this is a lie on her part, I had been experiencing hallucinations and delusions. I tried to explain that she was lying about the last part, that because she cannot see it, she believes it is not real. When it is, but only I can see it. But the doctor ignored me, like always.

I knew that was it then. A family history can be accessed, I am aware. With a grandmother and aunt with schizophrenia, they are bound to be worried. I understand. But I know them, and I'm not like them. Still. I am now being referred to CAMHS. Which sucks, hardcore.

I hate doctors. They think they know everything. When they don't.

    Bleugh.
