  If the media carries on like this, they'll end up turning him into a victim, and people will start to sympathize. All the politicians will say stuff like this in private when they're stressed.

  No, 'bigot' isn't a swear word, but Brown misused it. Mrs Duffy just asked the questions that anyone might, given the chance - and while she was at it, gave the PM the benefit of her opinion. In fact, in blaming his staff and being intolerant of Mrs Duffy's views, it was Brown himself that came over as bigotted.
