My criminal record

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
About a year ago i stole something from a shop. It was completely unlike me and would never do it again. I got off with a formal caution. When I was arrested i was in a complete state, but asked the police officer if this would effect my chance of getting intothe royal marines band service and he said no.

Now has come the time to start my application process and i dont know what to put under my criminal record section. I am not going to lie about it and this is why i want to clarify weather it is spent or unspent. I think it lasts 5 years and this was only a year ago, but someone said to me it could be when i am 18 it runs out - in which case i will be just 18 when im planning to enter the marines. Does anyone know anything about this. Or can anyone give me any advice on where to go to ask about this. It is quite a specialist topic not many people know the facts but i need to get it right.

Thanks for the help xxx

To my knowledge cautions are considered 'spent' after 6 months, or at least that used to be the rule.

Though, some jobs are allowed to ask for full disclosure, as in any trouble you've ever been in.

It' only a caution. You shouldn't have to mention it.

I've got a caution for indecent behaviour that'll take 3 years before it's spent.

A caution is not a criminal record (but accepting it is an admission of guilt) so you don't have to disclose it at all. However, if you are applying for a job that is exempt from the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (e.g. working with children, vulnerable adults, possibly even military service - the application form should make it clear), it would be wise to fess up cos if you have to have an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check, it could show up. (standard CRB it won't iirc)

I'm sure the marines would have you anyway :) my friend is joining the army, and he says loads of the people joining up with him were in trouble with the police a lot when they were young... but it dose bring a smile to my face thinking of one thing he told me. One of the lads there, got done for stealing cars and joyriding - so now he's joining the army to be an army driver :D.

I think thats a happy ending all round, really. Good luck anyway, I don't think I could manage it :)

Another way would be to ring the recruiting office and ask.

Don't link it in anyway to your application, just say your interested in joining whicever bit it is and ask if it would be a problem!

If you have been given a caution and you are asked if you have any criminal convictions you can say no. If you are asked whether you have a criminal record you have to say yes - unless it has been 5 years or more since you got the caution.

The Royal Canadian Artillery Band is one of six professional military bands in the Canadian armed forces. The band consists of 35 musicians and is stationed in Edmonton. The band's roots go back about 100 years to the military bands that existed in the Canadian artillery at the end of the 19th century. So, the Royal Marine Band is just one out of six bands, and some of those service branches accept women recruits.

I would not try to guess if I should admit my past record when applying to the military. Admitting it seems the best course of action, but you can find out in advance by talking to a military recruiter on an informal basis without giving him your name. They have local recruiting offices and they have military shows where recruiters are available for informal discussion. You might want to approach a recruiter that will not be in the same location that you intend to apply, so that your actual recruiter will not recall your previous discussion.

Some military background checks can be very thorough and include interviews with many people that you know. This could be the case for military bands since bands tend to play in front of dignitaries.

When you apply for job in the private sector, (non-government) pre-employment background checks do not do as many interviews with people you know, but they tend cover a larger number of topics. Typically, Pre Employment Screen Background Checks include: Verification of identity, SSN, employment history, education, and address history. Checks State and county criminal records, sexual offender, terrorist watch, credit check, bankruptcy. (Federal criminal records available.) Matched by name & birthday.

Was this 2 year old thread dragged up just so that someone could plug their search website? I think so.

still worthwhile pointing out though that whether they are spent convictions or unspent for the RM you still have to declare all convictions / cautions.

    Wondering in U.S.

Hi all. I have a friend in portsmouth, and havent heard from him in weeks. He has a bad past history of arrests, so im a tad worried now. Are there any websites, like local newspapers, where I can look to see if he has been arrested?

What has that to do with this original old thread?

You could always ask his family or ring the police?

Well, it has nothing to do with the original post, but I thought I might find a friendly person to answer me.

I dont know his family, and police dont give that info over the phone to just anyone. But thanks again for your help.

You can try googling his name or reading the local rag, otherwise without being a family member you aren't going to find out.
