Periods of unemployment

Just a quick question.

The other week I found a job after about 12 months of being unemployed and struggling to find work again.
After a few days I was let go due to dis-satisfactory references.
So I am back again to square one.

I'm mainly concerned with my period of unemployment causing employers to look askance on this period.
I have filled it with voluntary work etc.

Is being unemployed in this time (recession etc) still the taboo it would usually be?

To me the references would be more of a cause for concern.

Well that is something I am dealing with at the moment but I have to be careful not to look like a trouble maker because I am giving the people who sacked me some grief over the situation because the person who decided I was to be let go never even met me.
