Travelling by car is a tad different from flying.

Id double check with them, but even though we are technically united, if you have one Id advise taking it.

My understanding is that you're likely to need some form of legal photo-ID. You may not have to have a passport but you'll usually need something. It's not about border controls, it's about anti-terrorism measures on flights.

Pre-9/11 you usually didn't need a passport, since then you usually do. Your airline's helpline should be able to help you figure out what you can use if you don't have a passport. (Photo driving license might work, but don't quote me)

Ok, I'm not flying anymore because it turned out to be way too expensive so I'm going on the train instead. While I'm at it....does anyone know roughly how long passports take to process these days? They have a chip now don't they? I'm applying for my first adult one soon and need it by late august.

however I would recomend ordering it ASAP as it gets busier for them nearer the summer, which means it'll take longer.

No you don't need a passport; driving licence will suffice.

That said, I've been on countless Edinburgh / Glasgow <--> London flights and I have sometimes not even been asked for any ID. Though I would take your driving licence just in case.
