Jailbreaking an iPhone Question

I jailbroke my 1st generation iPhone a while back to version 3 of the iPhone software and now I want to upgrade to version 3.1.2 but I am unfamiliar with BlackRa1n.
I'm trying to follow the tutorial at http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2009/11/03/tutorial-jailbreak-iphone-3-1-2-blackra1n/ but I am just a little concerned about one part at the start of the tutorial.
If my phone is currently jailbroken, and I upgrade to v3.1.2 via iTunes, on Windows, will this not 'brick' my device? Or will I be able to upgrade okay and then run BlackRa1n?
Anyone have any experience with this?
***Update *** I think I understand now that I need to do a software RESTORE. Anyone know where to find a better tutorial?
