Are you on any medication? If not, I'd go and talk to your doctor about this. I felt like this last Summer and spoke to my doctor about it and they prescribed me antidepressants. This won't be the answer for everybody but for me they've helped a lot, as well as coming to terms with what had made me feel that way. Not everybody has a reason though as it is often just a chemical imbalance.

I guess my other tips would be to keep yourself busy, don't hide away in your room not talking to anybody for days at a time, that doesn't help. I didn't feel like eating either, to the point where my flatmate would come and give me food to make sure I'd eaten something. If your favourite foods don't appeal to you, try eating some fresh fruit/veg and very simple things like rice which are good for you just to keep yourself going. I'd also advise trying to do some exercise as my psychologist recommended this to me (something about it releasing endorphins I think.) As for the sleeping, I wish I could help you with this but my sleeping is still a bit funny, but I remember the first night I actually slept ok after I started feeling like this. It might sound silly but I love ducks and that afternoon my mum had bought me a duck shaped travel pillow and for some reason having that there made me sleep really well.

Other than that, I'd say let us know how you get on and don't be afraid to say how you feel, many of us on here have or have had depression, it's nothing to be ashamed of :)

Not every doctor will do this. When I saw mine in June 2007, he didn't give me any.

I am tempted to go and ask (I'm at uni and live away from home; so different GP) for some. Whetehr they'll help much, I really don't know.

That's one possible theory, don't think it's something we should be stating as fact.

There are a lot of helpful things you can ask your doctor about besides medication. Talk therapy, cbt... a therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist... learning the cause of your feelings and coping mechanisims can be of infinate help. It may be a slow process but the results can be life lasting. I think that seeing a professional who can assess you more throughly should be your first option and having them and you discuss medication, not your gp.

    Hi there momofairy

Sounds like a really good plan - hopefully your doctor will give you a range of options from counselling to medication to suit your individual needs.

Good luck and let us know how you get on :)

We can only self refer for certain things, everything else you go to a GP and they refer you to a specialist if they can.

How does that work? Can't you just go in and ask for a refferel then or do you have to have them pretend to diagnose and cure you first :\

They don't pretend to diagnose you, that's their job, to be diagnosticians. You go in and tell them your symptoms and they either give you care through them, or refer you somewhere else for care, they're usually your first port of call for anything, contraception, muscle problems, depression. I like the way our system works. If you refer yourself for things, you actually have to do the first stage of diagnostics yourself to know who to refer yourself to.

I don't think you have to self diagnose to go to a specialist, if you have a sinus problem you go to an ent, bad toes, podiatrist, lady problem, gyno... pick a part on your body and the doctors are pretty self explanatory. I wouldn't feel comfortable having a general practictioner, who granted knows a lot about many things, help me for something specific that really should require somebody in a more specialized field, especially when the problem and procedure for diagnosing and treatment can be quite complicated, lengthy and very shaded and unclear like mental health problems.

But thats totally off topic now so I shall shut up :p

If you go talk to your gp, they will diagnose you're problems as far as they see it, and if it requires any specialist person, they can forward you to the correct person to deal with whatever is wrong. When I broke my hand, it looked like it was just dislocated across the fingers, and when I saw the gp, she said that she thought it was broken, so she put them back into place. Then I was refered to the hand person (I forget her name) in the hospital. Turns out i broke all the fingers inside the palm of my hand. But they will also refer you to the specialist if you request that it be done so as well.
