for the past couple weeks, i've been so sad and i dont know why. i dont feel like doing anything, cant sleep or eat and i feel like there is no hope anymore.
on the plus side, i do get days where im really happy and i feel like i can do anything but that doesnt last long.

I guess my other tips would be to keep yourself busy, don't hide away in your room not talking to anybody for days at a time, that doesn't help. I didn't feel like eating either, to the point where my flatmate would come and give me food to make sure I'd eaten something. If your favourite foods don't appeal to you, try eating some fresh fruit/veg and very simple things like rice which are good for you just to keep yourself going. I'd also advise trying to do some exercise as my psychologist recommended this to me (something about it releasing endorphins I think.) As for the sleeping, I wish I could help you with this but my sleeping is still a bit funny, but I remember the first night I actually slept ok after I started feeling like this. It might sound silly but I love ducks and that afternoon my mum had bought me a duck shaped travel pillow and for some reason having that there made me sleep really well.
Other than that, I'd say let us know how you get on and don't be afraid to say how you feel, many of us on here have or have had depression, it's nothing to be ashamed of

Not every doctor will do this. When I saw mine in June 2007, he didn't give me any.
I am tempted to go and ask (I'm at uni and live away from home; so different GP) for some. Whetehr they'll help much, I really don't know.
That's one possible theory, don't think it's something we should be stating as fact.
Sounds like a really good plan - hopefully your doctor will give you a range of options from counselling to medication to suit your individual needs.
Good luck and let us know how you get on
We can only self refer for certain things, everything else you go to a GP and they refer you to a specialist if they can.
But thats totally off topic now so I shall shut up
