    Hi Johnny Mac,

A few of the team at YouthNet have done volunteering in Africa. I'll get them to add some of their advice.

You might find some of the blogs on Do-it useful as well:

    And the Overseas section:

    Cheers,

    Hey Johnny Mac

Great questions and the answer is that there is no real minimum amount of time you have to donate. Lots of organisations are happy to let you volunteer for even just a two week period.

However, it is important to do some research on any organisation that you wish to go with. As Olly B has mentioned above Do-it has some good links about international volunteering but I would also recommend this one:

    http://www.ethicalvolunteering.org/

This is a great website that can give you some questions to ask organisations about what they do and also poses questions to you, the volunteer, on what you want to achieve and get out of the experience.

In my personal opinion although two weeks would be good fun, a much longer period would allow you to achieve a lot more.

    Hope that helps,

    Dave
