35 million Americans living off foodstamps...

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Story. Not quite as obvious as the 1930 breadlines because they can use their cards discreetly in the grocers with everyone else, but quite disturbing nonetheless....overall number is even higher when you consider household dependents.

Seeing as their economic cycle is running about 6 months ahead of ours, this is a sneak preview of what's to come...buckle up folks.

Be careful what you wish for because you may just get it. So goes the old adage.

No doubt Barack et al will provide a bucket of hope with each stamp.

Isn't that socialized food... communist food?!

Another production would seem to be not only possible but essential, at this point...what that would be I cannot say - none of the available options at present seems to be stable enough...

Indeed. To add to the socialised medicine they are about to have rammed down their throats.

One of the first things to do when addressing a problem is to recognise what it is. Maybe there will be some who can diagnosticate as you did. I guess they have a chance.

Is that living or existing? Time we reversed The Enclosures and grabbed the land back from the few and then set about feeding ourselves. We've learned alot since then. You need to look back to move forward........

Most of the people this thread concerns probably won't mind having anything like 'socialised medicine' rammed down their throats.

Many more would probably not be bothered what else went down their throats, rammed or otherwise, so long as it was food.

Thankfully a great many Americans appear to be drowning out this type of groundless, shrieking insanity, and their government will hopefully bring in a system that actually enhances quality of life and happiness for mass of population.

"Government is the problem not the answer"

Who said that ? If you can't remember maybe it is because his alzheimers was viral !

You have highlighted the problem there. My guess is that those people you refer to have been indoctrinated to suck on the Government nipple for so long that ANY drips coming from that teat will do.

    Weaning, anyone ?

Putting statements in quotes does not automatically lend any further credence to this position - nor do cryptic allusions to the speaker (Reagan).
    My guess is that

Precisely - your guess; because almost everything you post on here is ideological supposition with only a paltry regard for any of the social scientific evidence on the matter.

Meanwhile, serious people who are actually concerned with what is really going on in the world try to develop and challenge versions of events based on available bodies of evidence.

You, in the main, do not.

When Ronald Reagan signed his $750 billion stimulus plan in 1981 ......
Funny when the darling of the right does it it isn't communism .....it snapped the U.S. out of a deep recession, ignited a high-tech revolution, and signaled the start of the greatest bull market in history...

If the President looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then the President probably is a duck.

I concluded communism, without the help of any peer reviewed social scientific evidence.

Who was the last President who was not a PRACTISING communist ?

You really don't have a clue what communism is, do you?

Incidentally, Americans already have socialized medicine, it's just the taxpayers money is used to prop up the profits of big business, rather than provide medical care to the population. They spend more taxpayers money on healthcare than we do ffs.

As for the main story, big deal? In the UK, people get benefits or tax credits. In America they get food stamps. Same in principle, just a different way of doing things.

Agreed. That is about to increase if the plans are to be believed. Corporatism/fascism/communism. Mussolini seemed to think the words were interchangeable since the actions were pretty much similar.

Agreed. I call it communism, you probably call it "someotherism". Do you think actions speak louder than words ?

Mussoline defined Fascism as the joining of corporate and state power which not only defines America very well but the entire western world right now.

There's sp many lewd jokes I could make at this point about food that I'd be here all day. :p

My question is simply: what's the rest of the world's record when it comes to this? Are we any better?

Though amusingly they work harder than a lot of the repribates on the streets.

I would say when ~15% of the adult population in the world's supposedly most developed country is living off the gov teat that is a big deal, esp considering this "recession" is nowhere near over...what happens when the gov has to face reality and slash welfare is going to cause huge social unrest, but then that's what FEMA is for.

FEMA brings a whole new meaning to socialised housing.

Hmm, it must be the real world you're having a problem with then. Tell me, which part of an economy built on private ownership corrosponds to the Communist Manifesto then?

That is a jump a flea would be proud of.

What has an economy built on private ownership got to do with what has been said previously ?

I thought we were discussing the President(s) being practising communists, and the CURRENT state (pun intended) of play, based on real world evidence.

"Everything the state has, it has stolen". Thus spoke Zarathustra indeed. (good natured and cryptically for you Martin)

Well this will certainly come as a shock to the hundreds of millions of Commie-bashing Americans who think they live in what is exactly the opposite of Communism... :D

Are any of you really surprised? The US is bankcrupt. Thanks to China America can keep technically running but its only a matter of time till the wheels come well and truly off.

I'm not surprised budda but I think most people don't realise that the UK is actually in a worse position financially than the US. We also don't have the military reach to secure natural resources or the domestic capacity to feed everyone. We are relying on goodwill to keep funding record fiscal deficits and when the wheels come off we don't have a plan B, other than hanging onto America's coattails it would seem.

I'm not convinced we are quite as bad as the US, they have been running a deficit for so many years almost as the norm. But in general you're right both of our nations are skint, I just think because we have a less prominant position and because we dont have the 'superpower' label it will be less disruptive when we fall.

What is your response ? Find a host to latch on to.

Have you ever considered that you may have backed the wrong horse and now it might be time to advocate a little personal responsibility and try to disassociate from such parasitical corporations ?

You keep saying it, but you've failed to come up with a single example of how any president is a communist. And since no president in the history of the United States has advocated the abolition of private property, you cannot accuse any of them of being communist.

Watch what they do not what they say and don't get hung up on labels; private property ownership is at historical lows across the developed nations, and that's not by coincidence it's by design. Communism was just another social experiment in how to manipulate people, truth is a capitalist democracy is far more effective.

If you look at public/private debt to GDP ratios and household/personal debt per person the UK is in worse shape, and % of GDP is more heavily skewed towards financial and "knowledge" based services than most countries including US.....we don't have North Sea oil to fall back on anymore and there's not much else tangible production or manufacturing going on. In fact the only thing propping our currency up recently was as a high interest carry trade swap against yen, chf etc but as this is all unwinding I can't see why anyone would want to be holding £, maybe that's why all the central banks are dumping it in favour of EUR/YEN/USD.

Of course when the $ collapses it will be more disruptive globally but that's not much comfort domestically if £ is also in the toilet.
