AVG Anti Virus

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Is it just me, or are AVG sending out WAY more little adverts to try get you to buy the full version?

I'm sure they didn't send out this many adverts before! It's driving me crazy! Has anyone got any other alternatives to AVG?

Doesn't protect you against phishing mind you. Many more ways to target a computer user than a simple virus.

I don't think I've ever noticed an ad from it at all, strange.

Cloud from Panda is supposed to be quite good and lightweight. I've put it on my brother's laptop and haven't had any complaints about ads so far.

Get the odd ad now and again with AVG. But hey, it's a pretty good anti-virus and it's FREE so why moan ?

A friend mentioned that Clound Panda thing, so I installed it in a Virtual Machine I had going and the interface is really, really basic like there's nothing to tweak!

I might give it ago, but its still in beta :(

NOD32 has the best scores in nearly every test, on 30 day trial though. If I was scrupuluous, I would stop abusing the trials and pay for it :p I don't think Linux is an answer in most cases, mainly because GNOME is most stupid UI ever invented, and KDE seems to be slowly dying.

Tbh Gnome isn't to bad if I'm honest but I prefer Xfce with Ubuntu

Would you say the performance is better then AVG? I'm giving it a little run now :)

KDE is starting to come of age, IMO. I hated KDE4 when it was first released, but these later releases are getting better and better.. :)

3 months back I'd have said all KDE4 criticism was completely warranted though. :thumb:

I use Avira, very good and it only shows an ad when you update.

tbh I'm not using it much, I rarely boot into windows. It's been probably years since my last full-disk search, but I don't remember it taking long. And I've seen it catch viruses on-the-fly before.

    Oh right :)

I hate it when your navigating your way through a Network drive and then AVG finds something naughty and trys to delete it >:[

    I've lost many a keygen!

After saying that it popped up a massive advert window today at a random point of time. Pah. It'd better not start doing that all the time.

I get an advert once a day from Avira. The paid version just gets rid of the advert but I can live with the advert. There is a pattern to it - It's a few minutes after you boot to the Windows desktop. Say you switch on your PC at 18:00 and the advert pops up at 18:10, you'll see it at 18:10 on every subsequent day if your computer is like mine and it runs 24/7.
