Conservation work & your bit for nature

Who gets involved in groupwork on nature reserves? mending fences in woodland, cutting back undergrowth, using tools, checking bird cages, draining ponds, felling trees etc etc

Especially volunteering to manage wildlife habitats in London. And what about conservation work holidays in various parts of the UK?

I can see this post was sent almost 2 months ago, so im sorry if this is a tad late.

To find local groups, you can look online or even check in your local library for leaflets. Where I live, there is a local group called the Friends of St Leonards forest, which I found out about from the library.

I used to run the conservation volunteers at my university, so i got in touch with a number of reserves, or companies.

One group we joined with was the BTCV (British trust for conservation volunteers), and they also do conservation working holidays across the UK.

Another group was the RSPB, who have a number of reserves in the UK.

With both of these groups, work included most of what you have mentioned above, and if you were particularly interested in birds, then the RSPB would be a good idea.

I have also taken part in a working holiday with the National Trust, which was fantastic!

I am also an active member of the WRG (Waterway Recovery group) at present, helping to conserve canals and the surrounding areas, and am looking forward to joining with a week-long event between Christmas and new year!

Information on finding volunteering groups in your area, and working holidays in the UK, can be easily found on their websites.
If you have a reserve nearby, just drop them a line as there will most likely be voluntary groupwork going on at weekends.

These are just a few that you can find, but there are many others that you can find through google.

If anyone has any questions on conservation work, feel free to send me a PM!

I've done a couple of BTCV ones too- I agree they are good. In London, LWT manages 30+ nature reserves in the City

They have volunteers, regulars and newcomers, doing groupwork in many locations- on a turn-up and join-in basis

Worth giving it a try urban dwelling Londoners!

I join a London Wildlife Trust group looking after a wood in South London. One of my friends there, spent a holiday last summer, doing conservation work in a RSPB bird sanctuary on islands off the coast of Scotland

I volunteer for the National Trust and I'm going out twice next week with the BTCV. It's my first time with the BTCV but I'm so excited about getting involved with such a great organisation!! I'm going to do as much volunteering as I can over the summer as I've finished uni until September. I love it and I'm hoping volunteering will help me follow my dream career path.
