Turning PC in an online TV Player

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Basically I have a few computers at home that aren't doing anything - I'd like to turn one of them into an online TV

Ideally it would remain on and when certain programmes are shown online it would record them and allow them to be played on demand so all buffering / recording is done in advance so when you want to watch something it's instantly playable - don't mind if it's a windows app or means installing some kind of Linux on it.

Have no interest in recording broadcast TV via TV Card just stuff you can download online.

Any suggestions?

    Anyone use this?

Don't know if this is exactly what I am after, but looks cool.

Ideally something with TED built in would be cool

I have my Linux box configured to sent movies to the TV, and I built a serial port IR receiver, so I can use an old remote control.

But I don't "record" stuff from the net. I've just downloaded "stuff" from the newsgroups. :)

That records and streams TV shows through your box. It's basically a free Sky+ Box, V+ (Obviously without the cable TV, but if you have that, you can do that too) etc. Just means you can record TV signals and save them to the harddrive inside the computer. The thing is, they are easy to setup but even though you are using a spare computer for it, you will need it to be somewhat powerful. It's just so you can convert them to other file formats etc.
