Whitening trainers

I have some converse trainers, about 4 years old so a bit grubby. I put them in the wash and the canvas got really clean but the white rubbed round the soles and on the toe is still manky!

Any idea how I can whiten them? Don't want to use bleach as this rots rubber?

strange..normally its the other way round when i try to clean mine, rubber bit goes sparkling and the canvas is murky.
Try just a sponge and washing up liquid?

Have you got something like http://www.countryclubsupply.com/servlet/Detail?no=8532

Here they are in the aisle with the shoe laces and leather protecting shoe spray and all that jazz. I remember back in the day of white sneakers we had that and it worked miracles! Shoes would look brand new.
