Stuff to take to Uni

Because the other thread is long and hard to follow..

Kitchen Stuff:
(Assuming self catering)
  • Large glasses
  • Mugs
  • Chopping board (or those big chopping sheets are even better)
  • Sharp Knife
  • Saucepan (don't get a tiny one)
  • Frying pan (I suggest a wok style one, can do all the usual frying stuff and useful for big things too)
  • Knife/Fork/Spoon x at least 4

General Stuff:
  • Duvet (check if one is provided, decide if you want double or single)
  • Duvet cover, sheets and pillow case sets x 2
  • Pillow(check if provided)
  • Cushion-good for making room more homely
  • Sleeping bag-if you've got one already it's worth taking
  • Posters, picture etc for walls -something a bit different to the standard poster sale ones is always nice
  • Pencil Case and usual contents
  • Bluetak
  • Drawing pins
  • Coat hangers
  • Multigang extension leads

Admin Stuff:
  • Bank card
  • Cheque Book
  • Some cash
  • Passport photos
  • Student finance paperwork
  • UCAS Number
  • Passport or Driving license if you have either

Domestic Stuff
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Shower Gel
  • Hand soap-or whatever you wash your hands with
  • Sticking plasters
  • Savlon or that ilk
  • Hair dryer if you use one
  • Straightners if you use them

That's what I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure others can add to this maybe in a cut and paste type way to keep it easy to look at.

    shot glasses
    more than one knife
    tin opener
    bottle opener
    cheese grater
    one mixing bowl
    wash basket

get a print out of your health summery from your GP because if you have any on going problems then they can deal with them quicker.
TV licence documents -make sure you change the address over if you already have one
a lamp -uni halls always have bad lighting

moisturiser for body and face- halls are also very dry
    deodorant
obvious stuff that everyone forgets: toothpaste, hair bands, painkillers for emergency and hangovers, hairbrush
a pen knife is very very handy! get one with screwdriver and bottle openers as well.

and a couple of things to make the room nicer, a rug, a throw for the bed, a picture (you can put canvases on the wall without damaging the wall or the painting by getting these special strips of velcro -maybe from WH smiths?)

I've got shit loads more in my room, but haven't got anywhere else to be, so the entier contents of my 1 bed flat (minus the furnisture that wasn't mine), in now in my not that big room in halls.

Loose change for the washing machine/tumble dryer

Some uni halls will allow you buy bedding from them.

Not worth it. Just use a bag/box.

To be fair doorstops are like a quid so its hardly a massive investment so I'd say its worth it. In fact in the first year we bought a pack of about 8 for about £3 in the poundshop.

Or you could just disconnect the automatic door close thingy, although I didn't recommend that!

we weren't allowed doorstops in our halls and the cleaners used to confiscate them (along with candles) so it might be a waste of money and better to use a box or whatever.

Another thing to take is maybe a bottel of wine and biscuits or chocolates to share when you move in..it breaks the ice a littlebit :)

    wooden spoons are useful,

    desk lamp,

personal items ie photos, cards from friends/family

any fancy dress items you have floating about- always useful!

don't take too much crockery-everyone in our halls each bought about three pots and pans and so we quickly ran out of storage space. most were never used.

alarm clock (to get up for those 9am lectures!)

can't think of anything else of the top of my head...
