What the diddly could be the matter?

Er, hello, it's me again. I posted a couple of weeks ago that I was having odd bleeding after sex, pain when urinating, general not nice times. Went to the GUM clinic at the hospital last week on advice of my GP. Had all the usual things done, got given some aqueous cream to make it feel better down there and got sent on my merry little way.

Today I went to get my results. They don't have my herpes test back yet but everything else came back negative. My urine sample again showed white blood cells and again refused to culture. The Dr says this means there's no bacteria and I shouldn't worry. I'm no expert, but I'm fairly sure that blood cells aren't meant to get into my wee so something's gone wrong here, right?

I mentioned that the cream didn't seem to have helped (which now I think about it, my GP thought I might've becvome sensitised to creams) so the Dr said she'd have a little look. She ended up getting a consultant in and neither of them seemed too sure, other than something isn't quite right. They reckon I've had an allergic reaction to the cream so have given me a different one, Epaderm, plus a local anaesthetic thing in a syringe for me to apply to my urethra once a day :S I don't like the sound of this but might as well try it. I'm going back to see the Dr there in 2 weeks and next week I have an appointment with the GUM clinical psychologist (anyone ever seen one of those?) but until then everyone appears to be at a loss as to what the problem is.

Anyone got any ideas?

x

Have they done any scans? Also shouldnt you be referred to a urologist? Or have they already done this?

    No scans and no urologist.

As lovely as they are, I think I'm being sent to the wrong people :(

When you go back maybe suggest these options and see what they say, I know it sometimes a bit daunting to do this especially to Dr's!

Hi, just to put your mind at rest about the white blood cells in your urine, it is very common for women to have some in the urine. It depends on a number of factors like time of the month, and how well you cleaned yourself down below before doing the sample, as they can be the result of skin cells or contamination from your back passage. But it is nothing to be concerned about, as long as the culture did not grow any bugs, it's fine. Hope that helps, and you get things sorted soon :thumb:

I have been mentioning kidneys to Drs but they reckon the pain I have is to do with my back injury and nothing else. I'm not sure that I could see another Dr as in a different specialist without a referral? I know I could see a different GP/different Dr at the GUM though but as I've seen 4 Drs at my GP here, one Dr at home and 2 at the GUM I don't know that that will be particularly helpful.

Snapping Crocodile - I have had white blood in my urine before, and I did that sample straight after a shower. I am sure it is ok but it just worries me that things aren't doing what they should be :)

    Cheers for the replies

GUM clinic stands for Genito-Urinary Medicine so being sent there pretty much is a urology referral in most areas, so don't fret yourself about not seeing the right people as far as the urologyst is concerned.

Yeah, it's just trying to get past the 'you are here so you must have an STI' phase. Sorry if that comes out badly, I just don't like the fact that as soon as I turned up I got the whole STI testing process even though I tried to explain that I had already had some of them done via my GP. I know they are just doing their jobs but I'd really like to find a Dr who could tell me what's wrong. It's been going on for long enough and I've seen enough people :(

Hmm now although standard urine cultures will grow most bacteria there are some that will not grow with the standard lab method used.

White cells in the urine probably indicate that something is going on - yes they are a sign of infection BUT they can also occur because of inflammation, irritation, other stuff going on in your body.

You should be aware that there isn't always an answer as to what is going on in someone's body. Obviously if you're not seeing the right people than something may be missed.

Have you had any other tests eg blood tests that might indicate that you have an infection?

Yep, they did a blood test, but I think they were only testing for HIV and syphilis...
