I'm making up a simple quiz for my students about the main news stories of the year.

Feeling a bit dozy today and all I can think of is:

credit crunch
US elections, and
the olympics

What were the other big (preferably international) news stories of the year?

    There was that tummy bug that made the rounds back in Jan '08.

    Pluto was no longer regarded as a planet (I'm not 100% sure if that was in 2008 though).

    England didn't get to play in this year's football cup.

    Cheers guys. Actually found a video on the BBC site that covers all the main news topics: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7795306.stm

    so rather than create a whole quiz, I'm just going to show that video and have a discussion. :) I doubt they will know who Karen Matthews/Russell Brand is, but there's a lot of international stories covered in the video.
