a non fish/shellfish alternative to nam pla?

i'm making thai red curry and i need an alternative to nam pla (its a salty fish sauce which smells awful on its own but really picks dishes up). One of my friend's thats coming over has a really bad reaction to fish and shellfish, thus i need something else in the dish...i was thinking soy sauce, but i'd have to use a tiny ammount as i'm allergic to soya...

is there anything else i could use?

As suggested by google, are salted yellow beans and fermented bean curd. The fermented bean curd will def give it an extra kick/falvouring to it, it's quite strong so only add a little bit of it!

just had a quick google, there's a recipe for vegan fishsauce substitute here: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cookbook:Fish_Sauce_(Vegan) (although it does containt soy sauce)
