House prices and crime

Hi,

the government is planning to release crime maps by the end of the year showing the crime statistics for local areas. How do members of this community think this will affect house prices? The obvious conclusion is that it will make selling houses in crime-free areas easier and selling in crime-rich areas harder.

However, the areas that rank highest for crime tend to be in cities, with rural areas ranked much lower. This map shows how local areas (about 800 house in each) rank:

Will this mean an exodus from the city? Will it polarise the market? Or will it have no effect at all?

Comments please!

This information has been around in one form or another for ages, isnt there a website like upmystreet which has all this sort of thing?

I would be amazed if there was a mass exodus from areas with a bit of crime, and the really rough areas are normally council estates and the people cant leave.

People will have an idea what the crime is like round where they live. It might stop people moving into to certain areas, but it'll be only one factor (others will be price, school catchment area etc)

House prices already reflect crime levels in an area, the statistics are normally freely available on our force website and others, and we encourage people to visit the places they're interested in at various hours to see what the area is like for themselves.

Put "acorn profile" into Google and you'll hit home.

Funny thing to post for your first and only ever post - why do I get the feeling this is actually SPAM to draw people to that website?
