Rent deposit

When a landlord or their letting agent receives the deposit from a tenant, they have to lodge it in a government fund. But apparently the government slake off the interest from the deposit and keep it themselves. If that is correct then I don't think they have any right to retain it. Is there a way the tenant can claim the interest back?

    Most of the time it is stated in the terms and conditions that you don't get the interest back on the deposit - check these.
