How do you work it out? I got my marks back but am trying to work out what degree classification I averaged out at. I can't find anything on my uni website to help. I know it's first year so is pretty pointless but I'm just interested :)

weight each mark (in %) according to how many credits the module is worth then work out the average.

    -40% = fail
    40-50% = 3rd
    50-60% = 2:2
    60-70% = 2:1
    70%+ = 1st

And as mimi said, take the average of all your overall module marks

sorry I'm a bit of a maths retard in that I can't convert it into percentages.

The 3 modules that I took exams for are.

    tha tale - 30 credits
    romanticism- 45 credits
    existentialism- 15 credits

So that is 90 credits in total but then I get stuck!

convert each modules mark to percentages by dividing marks gained by potential marks then multiply this by 100. Then double the first modules percentage, tripple the second, add them all up and divide by 6.

You're probably explaining it well but maths isn't one of my strong points

for my first module i got 67 (worth 30credits)
    second i got 59 (worth 45credits)
    thrid i got 54 (worth 15 credits)

    so 90 credits = 100%

do i divide 67/90 and so on?

i can see your problem now, not sure how to work that out/cant be bothered to try but im sure some maths head will be along at some point.
But at a rough educated guess i'd say it works out around 62%, 2:1

Assuming each module was marked out of 100 the mark is the % so your marks are 67% 59% and 54%.

As the first module is worth twice as many credits as the third double it so it is 134. The 2nd is worth 3x as much so tripple it - 177. Add these to the last mark, 54 and you get 365. This is like having 6 15 credit modules so the average can be taken. Divide 365 by 6 to give you the final mark, 60.8.

I think I've gone completely wrong :banghead: For some reason I forgot about the C/W mark and the other modules. Thanks for being patient

thanks, did you use the final mark at the end?

yeah. just treat the large modules as multiple 15 credit ones e.g. a 45 credit module would be 3 x 15 credit modules so a average can be worked out.

    67 + 67 + 55 + 57 + 57 + 57 + 58 + 60

    divide by 8

    = your final mark

But its not a whole number, if the grading system worked like that then where do you draw the line? Sure you're only 0.25% off the mark but it's what you have acheived not what you're closest to..

I thought it would get rounded up. Ah well. I'm pleased with my mark anyway

You may get lucky i dont know, but my first year i came out with something like 48.8 and was marked down as 48 so i know my uni doesnt round up. Its not a massive issue though except for maybe getting a placement as most peoples first years dont tend to count for much if anything (mine was 0% of my final grade)

Yeah same as. This first year doesn't count towards the final grade. I just wanted to see where abouts I was on the spectrum really.

York (Linguistics at least) had 59.5 - 69 as the 2:1 boundary, so the 0.75 would make it a 2:1.

Rach does your first year count to your overall degree grade? My first year counted, but only half as much as each of the other years. Too confusing to work out and so I never bothered!
