Growing tropical plants

I bought a tropical plant thingy (like this) and planted the seeds. It's starting to grow now, very exciting!
I also invested in a fluorescent lamp to suppliment their light when it's a bit dark.
My question is: do plants need a minimum amount of dark per day? I know photosynthesis takes place in the light, and respiration more so at night. But do they need some dark time to respire? I.e. should I turn off the light for some time? It'll be off when I'm asleep anyway (6 hours or so).
