    Interesting concept.

Despite the doom-and-gloom rantings of the tabloid press, it seems we fare quite well on violent crime.

Not so well on number of jailed people per 100,000 inhabitants though.

What a surprise. Here's another: We beat Iraq too!

Poor Iraq. Its right at the bottom. Nice one Bush.

Still the UK's not very high. Maybe I should go live in Ireland, they're pretty high :chin:

Still pretty high though. One thing that always gets me is how Hong Kong is always at the top, whilst China is so low. How can two bits of essentially the same country be so different? I know they have a certain level of autonomy, but you wouldn't think the difference would be that much. I don't know how they measure it though, because it seems to me that anyone with money in China at the moment can do whatever the fuck they want.

Completely different economies. Hong Kong lept at the chance of political unity with mainland china but made sure China wouldn't intervene in their economy for i think 50 years. ha.

China's score is dragged down severely by its corruption (score 33) and financial and investment freedom ( both 30) and property rights (20. How many people were made homeless for the great nationalist willywaving orgy the olympics? Eurgh).

To be fair, the economic freedom list is in many ways just a case of whereabouts on the political spectrum your country lies. A communist of socialist country is always going to be behind a free market capitalist economy like America. And since Britain has move slightly to the left in the last 10 years, it's not surprising that we've gone down in the standings. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. "Fiscal Freedom" for example, is a measure of how much tax you pay, with a less = good approach. Similarly, "Government Size" is essentially a measure of how many services are provided by the government. You will notice that a lot of our fellow European countries are significantly below us for the same reasons. But I wouldn't argue for one second that this is a bad thing for the good of those countries. They're just further to the left than we are, and have better public services as a result, incidentally.
