If I was to get my own web site and address, how do I go about it? It would be used for uploading my artwork mainly, need it to look good with a decent editor - not to difficult to use.

Thanks

J, if you read this - how did you go about doing your site? It is a good site.

I used freeola but actually host the site on BT and redirect it. Freeola is free but you have to dial up to upload the site (but you can redirect it to other free space to get around that).

Unfortunately, I am on Manx Telecom server - how much is it for your own domain name?

    Thanks, lady

Domain names vary. A .com is more expensive than .co.uk for instance, but whichever, they are pretty cheap really.

Take a look at www.easily.co.uk or my friends at http://www.FreshEgg.com and take it from there.

it's cheap, but you don't get telnet access

Why would you want telnet access to any account anyway? Telnet is so damn insecure (yeah, like FTP is secure, D'Oh!) it isn't worth it, and I don't see what good telnet is on a web hosting account anyway... ?

I use Easily for my site, and I think that they're fantastic - the user support is particularly good. My only quibble with FreshEgg is that they use IIS to host their websites, and I don't trust IIS as far as I can kick it, but that's a matter of opinion.

    CD

I can't seem to change file permissions with through FTP, whereas with telnet/SSH you can use CHMOD.
    Also useful for passwording directories.
You need telnet to use and debug PERL(!) too.

I look at buying a domain from easily.co.uk - do I need to buy the 'easily' hosting and the email address option? It says it supplies you with 20 forwarding email addresses anyway???

    OK.
if you get yourname.co.uk, you can redirect it to a site like www.yourisp.net/yourspace (space on an ISP), or you can choose the £35 a year webhosting.

I think they give you about 100MB of space, but you can run out of data transfer (if *lots* of people view your site, or you upload large files often). It's still cheap, though.

As far as email goes, you can have 20 email alisaes (the actual address) and redirect them to 20 different hotmail accounts, or you can have yourname@yoursite.co.uk and bea able to send mail to and from easily's mailservers (using outlook or similar).
    The mailservers are IMAP/POP.

Sorry it's a bit long winded.
    Hope it helps.
send us a mail or something if i've confused you
