Hey everyone, Im just hoping you can help me out with a couple of things. Firstly Im doing a website and meant to be putting some banners on it from other sites. Do I just save the banners from these sites (they save as .bmp) and insert them. I did that but when I went to preview they didnt flash like they should........I wasnt sure whether they still would when actually uploaded on the net or not? And also how do I copyright a name or set something as a trademark? Thanx

Right, the banners, aside from being god awful. You need to find the code that relates to the banners and insert into your site.

Trademarks and copyrights...last time i checked, you needed to go to the patents office.

But I think you're too ignorant to be doing anything valuable like a website. Stick with colouring books.

Firstly Im doing a website and meant to be putting some banners on it from other sites.

Firstly, do you really want to put banners on from other sites? As you've probably heard people moaning before about hating 'popups' and advertisements... people who surf the web are inpatient and want what they are looking for fast and easy, its something that many people overlook...

Do I just save the banners from these sites (they save as .bmp) and insert them. I did that but when I went to preview they didnt flash like they should

Like metioned, you need to save the images as GIF or JPG, that format supports animation and is a proper format used for web graphics...

I wasnt sure whether they still would when actually uploaded on the net or not?

Yes they all need to be uploaded to your site and don't forget to test them, think about it this way, how can people view something if its on your machine and your not connected to the net?

The internet works on IP addressing, your site has an address something like 192.96.48.106 or to you a DNS address like www.geocites.com/users/mysite and everything you want people see needs to be uploaded to this place or they won't be able to view/access it

And also how do I copyright a name or set something as a trademark? Thanx

unofficially you can't, how can you determine you thought up before everyone else? If your site is on say 'PS2' or something then the rights for that reside with Sony, your comments are mearly views on that subject. The only way to do it is private and that costs money and its not worth it unless you have a major popular site...

    Hi Narcotic.

When you say that you "are supposed to be putting some banners on it from other sites" I am getting the feeling that these are from banner exchange programmes and similar. Is that right?

If so, don't rely on them to drive much, if any traffic to your site because they won't. What they will do is make your site link to their site, and help their site, not yours.

However, doing mutual link or banner exchanges directly with other sites, outside of a proper programme, can be far more effective.

First, you've got to learn about image editing and image formats. The .bmp or bitmap file format for images is not valid at all on the internet. Browsers are only designed to show .gif and .jpg format images. A .bmp file will not display in a browser.

To get started in learning about image formats, which type of images should be used with each format, and how to apply all this to better web-design, I strongly advise you take a look at WebMonkey, a part of Lycos, which has hundreds of excellent, plain-english tutorials on HTML, Images, Javascript, and everything else you could possibly need to know at this stage.

When it comes to getting visitors to your site, forget about banner exchanges. The only good ways to get people to visit your site are by being listed in search engines, and by having links to your site on other sites (proper text links, not banners).

For a basic guide to getting your site into the search engines, feel free to take a look at my own site on this topic at WebMarketingPlus.co.uk (non-commercial site).
