Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I really need some help on this one. My "friend" has made a website and put some really horrible stuff on it about me! I'm SO upset cos its about my past and no1 elses business, however he refuses to take it off his website. Is there anyway i can put a virus or something onto his webpages?! I need to get it off the net. <IMG alt="image" SRC="frown.gif" border="0"> <IMG alt="image" SRC="frown.gif" border="0">

it is illegal to post defamatory comments about somebody without their express permission. Refusing to remove the information is in violation of the data protection act. if he refuses to remove the information contact the website. If they refuse to help then contact the police.

Whowhere: I must disagree. It is not in any way against the data protection act to print detrimental/defamatory/libelous content; in print or within a website.
However, depending on the country in which the website is hosted (To find out where a site is hosted, get the ip address of the domain under which the website is hosted, and query it using ripe.net; alternatively, paste the address into the tool at visualroute.visualware.co.uk and it will show you graphically) it may be considered as libel/harrasment/infringing on a persons privacy.

I recommened Debs, that you send an abuse report to the webhost with immediate effect(if you need help working out which address to send the abuse report to, paste the domain name (the bit after the www.) of the website here).

Inform the webhost that the website in question's content is defamatory, libellous and infringing on your privacy. Most free webhosts have stringent security and privacy policies, and most implement strict rules on the content members may host within their webspace.

    Hi Deb.

You said "I'm SO upset cos its about my past and no1 elses business", and that sounds like you mean the information he posted is true, but personal.

If the information is true then I'm afraid it is NOT classed as libelous or defamatory. Its just reporting. Just like when the papers print facts about crooks, politicians or stars that the people discussed would far rather had never got out.

However, spreading a virus IS illegal.

If this 'friend' is young then the best way to get the information taken down is perhaps to ask his parents(?) or someone else that he will feel more inclined to take seriously.

The only lesson that is certain, is always be very selective about who knows personal stuff about you. However that doesn't help you much now does it?

Okay, well plan B is to find out personal stuff about him (talk to his ex girlfriends or boys he's trusted in the past) and when you have some nice embarrasing stuff about him, tell him that if he thinks its cool to share personal stuff about you then he must think its okay for you to share stuff about him too.

Again, parents are always the best source of embarrasing info. Baby photos, stories of how he wet the bed as a kid, all that stuff - no-one beats parents at being a permanent reminder of every embarrasing moment of your early life. <IMG alt="image" SRC="smile.gif" border="0">

post the website address pls and it's possible to contact those who own the server the information is on

feed a lot of legal bullshit to them

it's possible to get personal information off of sites, even if it's true. they need consent.

    URL would be handy <IMG alt="image" SRC="redface.gif" border="0">)

DON'T put the URL up here - it will only mean that more people read things about you (true or false) that you don't want made public.

You might need some legal advice before you do anything. Here are some helplines to start with: http://www.thesite.org/info/helplines/#legal

And your father being a judge makes him the be all and end all of knowledge does it? Surely you must know that all judges are out of touch tossers? We're taught that much at degree level anyway.

If you care to read my post again you'll find that I said they can be done for libel if the information is untrue. I don't know if it is or isn't.

You might also like to know that my father is a police officer, which means he will have a lot more experience with um....anything than your dad.

Yes, and we all know that all police officers are bumbling racist white men, don't we? You asked for that Whowhere.

Although I agree with you on principle, that just cos his Dad is a judge doesn't mean anything, doesn't mean you can slag his dad off and start going on about "my dad is better than yours".

I can only guess, but surely neither of those generalisations is an accurate reflection of the truth. Not to mention they are 'hitting below the belt'. <IMG alt="image" SRC="frown.gif" border="0">

Come on guys let's not get into another slanging match.

    OK.

As the more sensible people have suggested ... go to the website host, whoever it is, and look for a complaints e-mail.

Master Devilish, why would anyone want to PASTE a url that has personal things about them?

Is this only for your own reference, in your sick, twisted and depraved head? <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0">

You should maybe try thinking before you open that massive cavity you call your mouth, and the other massive cavity called ' where my brain should be' <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Finally, i can't rememebr who said it, but no one cares if your ' daddy is a judge' because anyone can say anything on here and people believe them.
