online journal considered harrassment

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I own a personal domain, and have hostees who I allow to post their own sites on my space and get webmail and stuff.

I am concerned about one of my hostees who publishes an online jounral (but not anymore). She is at university and has been asked by a senior member of staff to remove her site as it has been reported as a form of personal harrassment by someone who she lives with. The journal was published under an alias and included a 'disclaimer' about it being a personal site with her own opinions. Is this really fair??? Doesn't she have the right to a personal opinion?

Have you ever confused a dream with life?

Oh and, the nature of the site was really not very offensive to others. It included the way she felt about people, yes- but her opinions were always backed up and never anything that doesn't (often) get said to peoples' faces.

quite a few of us on thesite run livejournals, which sound similar to the kind of site that ur hostee ran/runs. i don't see what is so wrong with what she is posting. if i were her, i would search for some legal advice.....actually, thesite is supposed to give some <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif"&gt; (DOOOOOOOM <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">)

    hope things go ok

i think both of these people are within their rights here, your hostee posting her opinion and the person who was posted about taking action if that person feels that he or she has been wronged.

the question how far ur hostee wants to go to protect her rights, because it could get ugly for her if she wants to keep it up, specially if the university staff wants to pressure her.

like turtle said, she should seek a little legal help, but i think she's within her rights to say no, but she'll have a fight on her hands to do so.

I dont know if it is legaly standing, but i was at a site the other day that had a novel (in my opinion) home page.
it stated that the site was private propert, and that police, members of a certain company and some other people were not permitted to enter the site, and on doing so committed tresspass. Interesting if nothing else.

She has a right to express herself. I'd say the university has a right in asking her to take her site down, but not [forcing[/i] her to. Maybe a good compromise would be if she moved it and posted under a new name so no one personally involved would know where it was??? I dunno. I probably wouldn't even go that far, I'd fight for my rights.... (to paaaaaaaaarrrrrrttttttyyyyyy... sorry, couldn't resist)... no, seriously, she is (from what I understand) 100% within her rights and if she's concerned about the other party taking serious action she should talk to a lawyer.
