£10 a month?!?!?! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif">

ntl's line rental is £11.99, but with that you get a high-quality fibre-optic digital telephone line...

not only that, you also get FREE cable TV, and completely FREE 24/7 internet access. it is also FREE to talk to people in your local call area who are also on ntl, and all other calls are much cheaper than BT. you can make national calls for the price of a local call...

for only £5 a month you can have an extra phone line. it's also £5 a month for a cable modem (64k, but it's only £20 for 512k).

BT have gotta be taking the piss out of you guys!!! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif"> <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif">

ADSL is definitely NOT the way to go. not for me anyway, due to the sheer cost of it. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif">

the same goes for telehouse pipes! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif">

and doesn't ADSL run over copper wires? don't like the sound of that. copper is dead.

cable modems run over optical fibres, much cleaner and more efficient and not susceptible to electromagnetic inteference

no, cable and ADSL run over the same thing, but have different exchanges.

NTL are so humourous, I have a bt phone line but I use ntl as my internet provider, it costs me 15 quid a month but i also get 15 quid worth of free calls. My mate has a ntl phone line but cant get this offer and has to pay for all his internet calls on the line unless he goes to a different provider coz ntl says he cant have the same offer as me coz he doesnt have a bt phone line, tis maddness, i have told him to get dissconected from ntl and connect to bt, then do the cheap internet connection with ntl, tis MAD>>>>>>>.

that's true. it's only available to people with BT or ntl phone lines. if you're on BT it's £15/month.. if you're on ntl, it's free as part of the basic line rental.

Wrong, BT and indeed all service providers know what sites you visit, this is not done by them having access to your history files, its done through their own server history files.... right try to explain.. hmmmm

Basically, an ISP is like a server with a perminant connection to the net, this server has whats called bandwidth which is basically a load of allocated space which it shares between all of its dial-up users. When you think you connect to the net, you actually connect to the ISP server which then allocates you some bandwidth... so when you go to a website, this information goes first through the server and down to your phone line...
Still with me? Good... when information is routed through a server to your home, the server makes logs of all addresses the client has visited, its a bog-standard administration tool unfortuatly, so any site you go to on the net is logged, the logs are sometimes randomly cross-referenced against certain sex sites (ie. child pornography)

This isn't entirely true.
JC described an HTTP proxy, which many ISPs use because it helps reduce their external bandwidth. Some ISPs set you up to use their proxy (check your "internet options") Others, freeserve I beleive, use "port redirection" to grab traffic to web sites. Other ISPs, such as demon internet or ClaraNet just let you get on with things. ISPs could start logging your packets, but turning that into something that can be interpreted is a reasonable job, and they are unlikely to do this unless required to by a court order. They _can_ determine which machines your machine has been in contact with, but they would need to ask the adminstrators of those machines which sites you had been connected to.

she flipped, im realy in the bloody dog house now!

so i afraid im gonna have 2 only visit u lovely peeps bout once every wk if that, in stead of once every day!

the phone number your modem dials has nothing to do with the place you connect to. The sex line has nothing to do with your internet usage.

I`d just like to add that the only reason I came here in the first place was because an article in a newspaper aaaaaages ago claimed that this website set up by the government was just a disguised porn site.
Of course I was clicking faster than you can say lesbian lovelies and was a bit disappointed to find the newspaper was wrong.
Dammit.
But I carried on coming (so to speak).

Whoever told your mum the number was for a porn site has as much web knowledge as the average pensioner. The number on the phone bill is that of your Internet service provider. When you look at a web page you are connected to your ISP and they route the different web pages from the Internet to your computer. That's why the Internet is always charged as a local call as you are only ringing your ISP on a local number.

My guess is that your mum is trying to call your bluff. If she still doesn't beleive you call her bluff and buy her a book about basic understanding of the Internet.

If you're lucky enough to live in an area where it's available you should definitely go for NTL Broadband (512kbps) and much cheaper than BT's ADSL!!

A tool that is frequently getting used more recently by system administrators is Microsoft ISA Server 2000, we've just moved over to it here and work and its tracking and display methods are some what suprising, this server basically gives graphs and site names and addresses along with how popular it is and what time its reached, it also states who the highest users are, where they go and pattens of use.

Its become a problem for me cause even though I'm a system administrator myself and can clear the logs, my boss sometimes looks before I get chance and I'm its highest outgoing user along with this being my favourite destination.

But your workplace box isn't your ISP. The thing is acting as a proxy (wether transparent or configured. If you wanted to preserve some confidentiality, you could find an external proxy that works over https. Then, with your web browser set to use https with that proxy, the company will see all your traffic is to just that one host. They'll still know that you use it the most, and might consider that hiding what you are looking at against AU.
