£10 a month?!?!?! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif">
ntl's line rental is £11.99, but with that you get a high-quality fibre-optic digital telephone line...
not only that, you also get FREE cable TV, and completely FREE 24/7 internet access. it is also FREE to talk to people in your local call area who are also on ntl, and all other calls are much cheaper than BT. you can make national calls for the price of a local call...
for only £5 a month you can have an extra phone line. it's also £5 a month for a cable modem (64k, but it's only £20 for 512k).
BT have gotta be taking the piss out of you guys!!! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif"> <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif">

and doesn't ADSL run over copper wires? don't like the sound of that. copper is dead.
cable modems run over optical fibres, much cleaner and more efficient and not susceptible to electromagnetic inteference

Hello, my name is John. I like to dress up as a kipper at weekends. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/guin.gif">
that's true. it's only available to people with BT or ntl phone lines. if you're on BT it's £15/month.. if you're on ntl, it's free as part of the basic line rental.

JC described an HTTP proxy, which many ISPs use because it helps reduce their external bandwidth. Some ISPs set you up to use their proxy (check your "internet options") Others, freeserve I beleive, use "port redirection" to grab traffic to web sites. Other ISPs, such as demon internet or ClaraNet just let you get on with things. ISPs could start logging your packets, but turning that into something that can be interpreted is a reasonable job, and they are unlikely to do this unless required to by a court order. They _can_ determine which machines your machine has been in contact with, but they would need to ask the adminstrators of those machines which sites you had been connected to.
the phone number your modem dials has nothing to do with the place you connect to. The sex line has nothing to do with your internet usage.
Of course I was clicking faster than you can say lesbian lovelies and was a bit disappointed to find the newspaper was wrong.
Dammit.
But I carried on coming (so to speak).

My guess is that your mum is trying to call your bluff. If she still doesn't beleive you call her bluff and buy her a book about basic understanding of the Internet.

A tool that is frequently getting used more recently by system administrators is Microsoft ISA Server 2000, we've just moved over to it here and work and its tracking and display methods are some what suprising, this server basically gives graphs and site names and addresses along with how popular it is and what time its reached, it also states who the highest users are, where they go and pattens of use.
Its become a problem for me cause even though I'm a system administrator myself and can clear the logs, my boss sometimes looks before I get chance and I'm its highest outgoing user along with this being my favourite destination.
