    Why dont u get BT surftime or anytime? to save ur phonebill being so huge.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    that sucks.

    and dare i suggest someone (Dom, Karla or Helly) write a letter of complain to BT telling them that this is NOT a fucking porn site.

    Look into these tired eyes. See something you might recognise.

    If u use the net loads then u'd probably b best 2 get aol unlimited, it bout £15 a month and no fone bill. Addmittedly aol is shite but free internet....

    Who's name does God use in vain?

    I don't get it. BT don't know what sites you have visited- they don't have access to the history on your computer, so how would they know if it was porn or what? The repeated number would simply be the number for your ISP [which I guess is bt?] I think they mightve just answered like that because they didn't know what they were on about. Either way, i'd suggest you write a really bitchy letter of complaint asking how they are going to compensate you!! (never know, might pay your bill for yOU!) Freya xx

    freya, thats what i was thinking reading everyone's replies!!

    if the number's 0345 or 0845 its likely to be your ISP. doesnt it say next to it? is your bill itemised?

    if its a porn LINE (a site is something you only get through the internet, a porn line is like a chat line, with those awful costs like 50p a min), then it's likely to be 09 something. you can get the phone company to put a block on premium rate phone lines, we had a problem with ours, these 0891 numbers kept coming up and it was none of us in the house, it was at 2 in the morning or something, okay i was up a lot of the time but i couldnt have made all these silent phone calls without being heard,and a lot of the time it was when we were all out. and there'd been this thing on watchdog about people from BT using people's accounts to make it look like it was them and get them to pay for it. so we had this block put on for all 0891 numbers.

    but theres no way your phone company can know which websites you've been visiting from your phone bill helly, i promise you!

    I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.

    I don't get it. BT don't know what sites you have visited- they don't have access to the history on your computer, so how would they know if it was porn or what?

    Wrong, BT and indeed all service providers know what sites you visit, this is not done by them having access to your history files, its done through their own server history files.... right try to explain.. hmmmm

    Basically, an ISP is like a server with a perminant connection to the net, this server has whats called bandwidth which is basically a load of allocated space which it shares between all of its dial-up users. When you think you connect to the net, you actually connect to the ISP server which then allocates you some bandwidth... so when you go to a website, this information goes first through the server and down to your phone line...
    Still with me? Good... when information is routed through a server to your home, the server makes logs of all addresses the client has visited, its a bog-standard administration tool unfortuatly, so any site you go to on the net is logged, the logs are sometimes randomly cross-referenced against certain sex sites (ie. child pornography)

    The repeated number would simply be the number for your ISP [which I guess is bt?] I think they mightve just answered like that because they didn't know what they were on about.

    Basically, when your parents called up BT Internet, they quered the amount of internet time and asked what had been visited most to try and figure out was so interesting that makes these high bills, which is where 'thesite' would of popped up on the logs...

    Information in these logs usual consists of something along the formated lines of:

    DATE / SITE / ADDRESS

    Date is self-explanitory along with address, but the site name will be a whatever is stored in 'thesites' HTML meta tags and/or the 'title' tag.

    <title>TheSite : Advice on drugs, sex and more </title>
    <meta name="description" content="Advice on drugs, sex, health, careers, money and more. Agony services, online community and polls. TheSite has local advice for drug addiction to
    tenancy agreements.">

    The amount of text of that which was stored in the log file is never the same length as the original but a standard charactor cut-down to fit the logs perametres, so the log would display something like:

    20/06/2001 - TheSite : Advice on drugs, sex - http://www.thesite.org/

    So, to round up... the administrator who your parents got when they phoned up did a search and got multiple listings like the one above, now because of the cutdown explaination and also the fact of getting rid asap of annoyed customers simply said when asked something along the lines of:

    "Yeah, most of the surfing you've been doing on your account is on the same address 'thesite.org' which from what I can gather is a sex and drug site"

    Sorted???

    Right I'm off to bed now, you've made my come-down head hurt more.... makes me sound like such a twat saying all that technical jargon... bahhh <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

    I don't think it does, people ask questions in order to get answers, which is what you're giving them. And not in a technical jargon type way either, ok so you write a lot but you explain what you're trying to say in an understandable way even to me (and I don't understand anything unless it's very simple!) So well done and keep posting <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

  • Girl-From-MarsGirl-From-Mars Posts: 2,822 Boards Guru
    helly, freeserve do a free thing too. you switch to something or other, pay about £13 on national calls a month, get the internet free 24/7. or there's a cheaper version for just free off peak. dont change to aol!! theyre not the only free option and they are the devil personified!! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif"&gt;

    Awww.. thanks..

    Nahh, I've just always tried to maintain an active social life where outside of work I have nothing to do with machines except for occassionally helping out friends...

    Right, you where asking about cheap Internet ISPs...

    heres some addresses:

    http://www.telewest.co.uk/athome/blueyondersurfunlimited.html - Telewest offer a service called Blue Yonder which a lot of my friends are on... its a fantastic internet speed and offers 24:7 access for about £19.60 a month
    http://www.btinternet.com/anytime/existingcustomers.html - BTInternet do a deal for about £25 a month which gives 24:7 access with free phone bills, but you need a BT line in order to take advantage of this.
    http://www.aol.co.uk/try/tryff.html - AOL also do a similar deal as BT, for about the same price, you need a BT line, thing I've always found about AOL is that they seem to like trying to govern what people look at and its a popular ISP for people who enjoy hacking as most of AOLs users tend to be people with no previous net experience.
    http://www.libertysurf.co.uk/ - Libertysurf was a company which originally did CDs which costed £20 or £50 and this would give you either 24:7 access (£50) or free access evenings and weekends (£20) with no phone or monthly charges... worth having a look because they sometimes offer this promotion again to say a first-come-first serve 500...

    Almost forgot:

    http://www.freeserve.com/time/ - Freeserve's Anytime service... £14.99 a month (but remember you'll probably be forking out another £10 a month on BT.. seems to be standard practice)

    Point to note tho... there have been reports of unlimited services like the above cutting heavy users off.. so how unlimited is unlimited?

    There are some good offers out there for the taking tho, possibly as well you'd consider speaking with your parents about getting a second line fitted, that way with you could have a dedicated line just for internet... so you'll never miss home calls either..

    That's what we have with NTL. We got that mainly because my mum wanted cable TV, but it also has free internet access 24/7 <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    The package we have costs about £10 per month plus phone calls on top, which are cheaper than BT rates anyway, but we still have our BT line because my parents didn't want to change our number. So we use the BT line for incoming calls, and the NTL line for internet and outgoing calls.

    Not being picky or anything but the BT Anytime package is actually £14.99. The Freeserve alternative is £12.99 (I think)

    But you also have to purchase the BT line offer thing being £10 a month, so £15 + £10 is £25... <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    The Freeserve alternative is £12.99 (I think)

    Its also £14.99 (according to the website..) <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    I think they only do one package, and it's £10 on phone calls and then unlimited surfing. If you make more than £10 worth of calls, then it charges you whatever they cost <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;
    Definitely worth it.

    You have to pay line rental on the line whatever company you're with. And Bt's is £10 a month.
