Songs for learning English?

I'm after some song suggestions.

I'm teaching a class of adults on Saturday and wanted to start the lesson with a song. I'll play the song, and they have to fill in gaps on a lyric sheet.

So I need a song that has quite simple vocabulary and isn't too fast or repetitive. And preferably something that won't drive everyone nuts if we have to play it over and over again.

Does anyone have any ideas? :)

I thought of doing a Beatles song, but then I thought maybe they would already know it (although not know what it means) and it might be too easy?

You could ask them what it means quickly though - and he's pretty clear when singing it

Our (crazy) middle school teacher used to always play "Old McDonald has a farm" when "teaching" us English.

"The Day Before You Came" by Abba is the one out TEFL teacher told us to use, and also "erase and rewind", or "manic monday" by the Bangles.

Oh and he started off with a global task, by asking us to imagine the daily routine of an office worker. Then he played us the song and we had to answer some questions, like "what time did she get the train?" and then we had to fill in the gaps for the lyrics. (TEFL lectures were really boring as he treated us as if we were foreign learners of English :yeees:) Hope that helps though.

The Smiths? Usually fairly easy to understand, and most of their lyrics are full sentences. Death Cab For Cutie too.

Thanks for the suggestions. In the end, I did Umbrella, the Billy Clyfro version, and it worked prettty well.
