A 56K Modems......

JsTJsT Posts: 18,268 Skive's The Limit
Does anybody else feel that a 56K Modem isn't good enough anymore. Surely modern download speeds need to be better than about 5kb/s at most! Anypne agree?

Yeah definitely m8 !!

I have a 56 k, supposedly !, modem and i'm only connected at 33.6 cos of BT's advances in technology .... where? I havent seen any

It also depends on what site you're downloading fom as well as how good your pc is.
People think that ADSL, cable or whatever makes things faster .. ok it does if you connect to a site that supports these. Most sites don't, and it'll be some time before they do.

I'll go before i stray completely from the topic lol

it's not really possible to squeeze any more data into a standard phone line than 56k/s

you might want to look into cable modems, available from ntl at speeds of 64k (£5/month) and 512k (£20/month), the latter being incredibly fast!

most sites will send you more than 5K/s (with the exception of sites like Geocities). Web browsing will be hellishly faster, but the real benefit comes when you make direct connections to other broadband users... try telling me that downloading mp3s at 60+K/s is a bad thing!

you should get better than that, you may wanna check it's actually a 56k modem

if not, give BT a ring and ask them to fiddle with "the gain" on your line..increasing or decreasing this can lead to a better connection speed

however as they are legally only obligated to providing an anologue line of acceptable quality, they may not give a toss about your modem connection

i know what you mean jst, but you're lucky to be getting 5k/sec!!! and we cant get cable down here coz its not available yet, neither is ASDL and i am not gonna be paying £40 a month for net access, even if it IS fast. and neither will my dad. it also doesnt help that until about midnight im connected through our network on dad's modem, so if i want to download i have to wait till after or i cant do anything without wanting to hit the computer coz of the speed (or lack of).

speaking of hardware inadequacies, 128mb doesnt seem to be enough RAM anymore either. its not like i run games or programs that are particularly memory intensive.. usually just messengers, IE, winamp and netscape for mail. ive got this prog called memturbo which does its best to flush out the RAM thats not being used, dlls and such like that arent needed anymore (or something... brain not up to speed today), and its always running loads now. when i first started using win 2k it was a lot better... but its gradually ground to a halt. i dont run icq anymore coz 2000 is too mem intensive and i only use it for texting really anyway... i think it may be time for a reformat

i have win2k and although some applications "eat" memory...it shouldn't be caning it as much as you speak

if you get up the task manager - right click on the start bar (but not the start button) then go to task manager...then have a look at performance and see how much memory it's using

usually it's only graphic programs that use up a lot of memory - when scanning in high res images as well

I have a 512kbps line from NTL and it is very good (had a couple of outages this week though) and as someone else said, it does depend on who you`re downloading from. But it is still faster than a 56k 99.9% of the time anyway.

id ask for my money back for the .1% of the time it isnt quicker than a 56k

512kb/s line is basically ADSL/cable etc

ie broadband - theres no way a modem should even compare (unless it's a cable modem)

As I said it depends on who you`re downloading from. The low speeds are almost always from file sharing progs where you`ve got some people that aren`t even connected at 33.6! If they can`t send it fast than 1k/sec I can receive it faster than 1k/sec.
Average it hangs between 60-90, normally the lower sixties. Not as fast as I`d hoped but still worth the money in my opinion.
Gotta contact them anyway as cable died 3 times yesterday, which makes 5/6 total in the last week.
That not good, that not good at all.
