Settin up websites

BillieTheBotBillieTheBot Posts: 8,721 Bot
My uncle is settin up a website for his buisness and hes asked me my advice as he's totally non-computerised (yeah i know its not a word but anyway <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif">). Im alrite at computers but not in2 all the technical stuff,
So I was wondering how hard is it to set up a decent website, or how much can it cost to get one done. He's already got a domain (?)

Thanx

    It would be probably better to get it done proffesionally bearing in mind he doesnt have any experience in it, i mean you can make a nice looking one on Frontpage but for the proffesional look and feel you need something like Dreamwaever which means $$. It would end up alot easier and cheaper getting someone to do it, but as for prices it depends on the extent of the site, wether it includes Flash elements etc and also the size of the site.

    depends dreamer on the level of complexity of the website. does he want to build just static pages? does he want to accept orders online? how much design does he want to put into it? these are just a few quesitions he needs to ask himself.

    he needs to sit back and decide what he wants his site to do for him basically. once that is done, then he can either try to build it himself or pay people to do it.

    if he wants to do it by himself.. then he needs to find an internet service provider that will host his website. once he has that.. then he can use some of the software that is out there like Dreamweaver or FrontPage to layout his site. those programs are very much like word processing and are fairly easy to learn. the other option is for him to buy a book on html and learn how to hand code a website. it's not that hard either, but if he's not a techie, this is definitely not something he's going to have the patience for.

    now should he want to pay an agency to do this for him. they will ask him the same questions i did. a good agency will charge anywhere from 2,000 pounds to upwards of 20,000.

    so if he wants to do this right, he's going to have to research this thoroughly. he should surf his competitors' sites, and larger business sites to figure out what he likes because the best thing to do is "borrow" elements from other sites. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    i wish him luck dreamer. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Alza's returned !! *APPLAUSE* <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

    OK. Websites.

    If your Uncle wants a proffesional site and doesn't really know about creating websites wouldn't he be better to get a professional to do it because it would give potential customers a better image of his company.

    Just a thought <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

    Like a few other pelple have said most programs are pretty straight forward and not 'hardcore' code .... WYSIWYG, what you see is what you get, just means you can type test, place pictures and in sorts out all the HTML code in the backround for you so you dont need knowledge of HTML .. a little might help !!

    The more you mess about creating sites the better you'll get, and then you'll become more knowledgable and implement more complex things into your site.

    Keep it simple, and be careful what colours you choose.

    Good Luck <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;
