    You can dance to anything.

    Jed(nice to see you again), when you say 'rock' do you mean metal or just anything with guitars?

    It takes blood and guts to be this way but i'm still just a cliché.

    OK. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Rock / Metal is best, and always will be .. because most of it's bands have been around for ages and have a massive following, because it's REAL music and none of the manufactured nonsensical crap that's about <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Pop, on the other hand, is ruled by little kids going out and buying the latest CD by <type pop band here> and thinking cos they're in the charts then that means their music's popular and other shit. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    what counts as rock? what counts as pop?

    ash, some people call a "power pop" band, cos they're relatively easy listening, but in my mind they're rock.

    but there are so many types of rock. anything from feeder to phonics to slipknot to muse to foo fighters...they're all quite different sounding bands. RHCP?

    i think overall, rock simply wins hands down. but u need to more specific in ur question jed <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Every genre has its cock ups and its good bands.

    Personally, I prefer rock. I love guitars and a damn good bass. Some bands have been around for years and they write their own music, play their own instruments and have their own look.

    i prefer rock, generally. but then theres lots of different categories and sub categories and god knows what. and everyone classifies different types of music/bands differently.

    some people like pop, some like rock. i think rock is technically "better"... actual musicians who compose and perform their own songs, and who dont need a team of choreographers and writers and lyricists to do all the hard work for them. and i prefer the sound of guitar bands.... not to say i like all guitar bands over all pop bands/songs.

    some pop bands are shite, some are good at being pop bands. s club 7, steps, some other bouncy-pop groups like that or boy/girl bands etc, ARE good at producing bouncy happy pop. some people just like music to have a nice tune and a chorus you can sing and/or dance to. some of these same people proclaim all "real" bands with guitars and suchlike to be boring and depressing, i know quite a few of these people. just because they dont like the music, doesnt make it crap. and the reverse applies for people who like rock music and say all pop music is crap. its just not to their tastes, some of it IS technically crap, yes... but not all of it.

    Sorry, I'll try to define them for you...

    Pop Music means popular music, usually has high single sales and low album sales. Usually dance related and studio based. Most pop music is aimed at teenagers and younger.

    Rock music is usually guitar based and has a 'raw' quality. Can be performed live by the very people credited with playing on the recorded version - not session musicians.

    Hope this helps.

    <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/mad.gif">We rely on the media (sometimes blindly) to bring us the good stuff and make us aware of the music out there. It's the media's ludicrous gatekeeping that allows the shit which they see as commercial gold to filter through and ravage the senses. These are the people who should wake up to the plastic reality they've created for themselves and realise that there are REAL bands out there making REAL music!!! Let's face it, people who are spoonfed rarely make the effort to feed themselves. Target the media dudes!!!!!

    I disagree.

    I think that the problem is that parents are looking for a soft option, one that won't 'corrupt' their kids. This gives us mediocre 'managed' bands where the image is the important part and the fact that the music suck become irrelevant. The 'bands' are then hyped beyond belief until the kids won't listen to or read anything that doesn't have the bands name on. All the while the performers are being ripped off by their managers and earning a pittance compared to the backroom boys.

    Personally I WANT my kids to listen to the drugged out zombies who produce works of art. Bands like The Beatles, Led Zep, Queen, The Stones are all considered classics and yet they were either stoned of pissed when they wrote some of the best music the world has ever seen.

    I am proud of the fact that my kids recognise Muse, The Manics, Travis etc when I play music in my car/at home or on my guitar and I try to discourage them from listening to steps, s club etc.

    The musci business is supposed to be about the MUSIC.

    Yeah, I see your point.
    However, in an attempt to create a standard, one which wins the parents' approval, we stifle the individuality of the kids. Ultimately, this need by the parents to "screen" the entertainment viewed by kids gives the media the upper hand.
    It is not easy to ignore or avoid the impact the media has on us, but with an open attitude to what the rest of the music world has to offer we can escape the clutches of this media monster and start writing the script ourselves.

    We need artists writing their own music, performing with real instruments and doing it for the love of the art rather than for the love of money. Anything manufactured and run by fat cats who linger in the background while raking in all the money and simultaneously raping the senses of young impressionable kids should be thrown out along with the fans whose ignorance fuels this whole freakin' charade!!!

    Hey all.
    At the risk of getting shouted at; don't you think that some pop songs are well written? I dont like pop much, but a lot of the writers are extremely talented! The pop "bands" often aren't up to much, but have you ever tried sitting down and writing a song? To get something original and catchy is often very hard, and I think more credit should be given to song writers, even if it's pop music they write.

    However, I have to agree, that most rock music is of a higher quality (in terms of instrumentation and originality) than pop.

    But it's all well saying that a lot of pop singers can't actually sing, what about all those wannabe rock stars whose guitar playing could be improved if they took lessons from a deaf snail and their singing is suspiciously similar to someone having their arm cut off......?? *no offense intended* (please dont shout at me)

    You're right about there being good song writers out there cookie.
    I write songs as well, and a good catchy song isn't always easy to write, but then that's not what it's always about. The pop song writers may be talented, but they're still guilty of exploiting the industry along with the producers and corrupt managers. They're in it for the money too.

    I'd also agree with you as far as there being "bad" rockers out there. But then all credit to them for not sticking to a formula. Scream if you want, just don't have it choreographed by money-hungry sharks!

    These days it's much easier to popularise songs and acts. So keep the original train going (be it bad or not), new trends and "music breakthroughs" stem from this, not from a formula!

    Kids need to know this. Do we really want our kids lost in a world of Britney Spears look-alikes? Is this the socialism of the music world? Is this the "Borg" of the "Final Frontier".....feeding the collective?

    Hey all,
    I agree with you about corrupt managers and record companies, it's not fair the way some of them (not all of them....) brainwash kids into buying records. But, there are probably some very good people in the music business who help bands no end to reach success with entirely genuine efforts.

    Although a lot of people say that you shouldn't be in the music business if you're not doing it for fun (and I do partly agree with that); they musn't forget that once in the music business, it's a job, and they do have to make money like everyone else (even if it tends to be a lot more than us... <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"&gt; ). I'm not trying to side with the people who take advantage of the industry and make more money than they need, I'm just trying to put forward some more ideas!

    theres so much music about 2day its hard 2 classify it into simple genres.

    well the mass of cheese taht ppl call pop nowa days that normly consists of a group of kids (male/female/both) does not even classify as music 4 me - so we cn rul that out!

    then we r left with dance - wich is more my thing. but 2 b fair thats jus cuz it "gets me movin" real music is more the rock, indie, metal etc. wich i also think is kewl

    so i gues im undecided - nething but teeny bopper pop basically

    its not illegal til u get caught :P

    It's all about rock'n'roll. Heavy Metal was the best fucking thing to happen to Britain, except for the Beatles. It's all about the Metal.
    Alas, I do find some pop infectious, i.e. Robbie Williams, even though he's in the sub category of Brit pop, which is a bit different than standard pop.
    But, back in the day, Zeppelin was considered pop. So it all depends on how you look at it, I guess.

    I personally think music is one of the most important things in someones life.

    I listen to loadsa pop, mainly because I can jump around to it, cry to it, whatever im feeling.

    Especially Atomic Kitten.

    Mama I love you, Mama I care.

    Rock wins hands down in my oppinion. It has more feeling and more originality than any of the crap in the charts at the moment. Most of the pop at the moment seems to be targetted at pre pubescent girls or townies.

    Who's name does God use in vain?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Rock is better, they have been round longer and the majority more can play an instrument and can write thier own stuff rather than the sh*t britney or any other pop personality comes out with!

    ego contemno populus, tam ego caveo populus
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    there a smart people and there are stupid people. There are VERY few *real* smart people. The majority of the worlds population is very stupid. If youre one of the lucky few smart people, rock on, more power to you.

    Pop will always be around. It always has been and always will be. Theres no 'versus', no-one is really right or wrong anyway.

    I really like Britney Spears though she has nice boobies.
