British Gas annual profits balloon up to £571m

At a time when Britain is the industrialised nation with largest number of people living under fuel poverty, and when unnaceptably high numbers of old people are freezing to death in their homes, and when prices have been put up by 15%, it's good to see that at least a few thousand shareholders and boardroom executives are keeping themselves nice and warm this winter.
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

I don't think British Gas was popular when it was a nationalised monopoly... At least now people can change supplier and get a better deal.

British Gas have a lot of small shareholders, when it was privatised there was a big campaign for ordinary people to buy a few shares in it. And if you can afford to have investments/funds/a pension/use a bank/etc then British Gas making big profits is indirectly a good thing...

However, it is outrageous that they're making massive profits on the back of massive price rises... The likes of British Gas, water firms, BT, etc are all essential public utilities and if in private hands should be tightly regulated to ensure they operate in the national interest.

    Couldn't agree more with that.

Nationalising them all would only drive prices higher, IMHO, but that doesn't mean the profits are acceptable.

I think a windfall tax is the best way of dealing with the problems. Whenever they put prices up they should have that four times that percentage taken from them in tax (e.g. 10% price rise = 40% tax on profits).

There needs to be more regulation but the problem is that the regulators at Energywatch and the rest have the financial interests of the energy companies at heart.

The biggest scandal of all is the treatment that these energy companies give to the poorest and most vulnerable people. People on pre-pay meters usually pay anywhere between 30% and 50% more for their fuel than those who pay monthly by direct debit. It isn't the wealthy who are on pre-pay meters yet they get cheaper deals.

British Gas are by no means the worst, though. Compared to nPower British Gas are knights in shining armour. The executives of nPower should be shot in the balls and left to bleed to death.

It needs to be easier to switch and there needs to be more competition - if people switched the moment another company was cheaper the margins would decrease and we'd pay less.

That and pre-pay does need to be the same price as normal.

Apparently we've all got it wrong according to the CBI, the Fat Cats Alliance, and we need to put the figures into "context".

Apparently poor British Gas only made £38m in the last quarter. Someone should start a campaign for the poor starving directors. They're obviously in a lot of pain so the only solution would be to euthanise them. Or we could have a charity concert for them- Twat Aid has a nice ring to it.

What's the turnover £38m on a turnover of £90m may be excessive, but £38m on a turnover of £3.8bn wouldn't be very good.
