I just bought the ultimate hitchhikers guide, with all 5 parts of the trilogy combined, plus an extra story. ive read them all before, but wanted to read them again and it was too much hassle getting them out in the right order and ordering them from the library! and i had a £5 book token.

so what does everyone think?? i know if luka were around hed say that the radio plays are the only way to listen!! hehe... i love it! it gets better the 2nd time ive read it too!

whos read it and what did they think of it, and if they havent read it, why not?! lol

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

    I read it

    I liked it

Should read it again to get it better, you usually understand better the 2nd time you read it imo. But I haven't been known for being too smart...

I've read each one of the 5 in the trilogy (a point i think is a bit insane lol) three times at least. love them !!!!! very very good!!! never heard the radio or seen the TV series, and don't want to either. i love the books and the TV will ruin it, i just know it!

I've not lost my mind it's inserted elsewhere - hence the limp.

lol j9, thats great! how did he manage the extra arm/head though? id have to get someone to go as marvin if i was going with my mates as the cast of the book! hehe

i could be eccentrica gallumbits... the triple breasted whore or eroticon 6! lol (yes i had to look up the name, but i knew her title! hehe).. anyway going a bit off the subject!

yeah i think the tv would ruin it too, it would totally detroy your mental pictures. which are a lot stronger the second time you read the books! i keep having the urge to quote bits or say stuff from the book, but my friends havent read it that i know of and they woudl think im highly strange if i start on about where all the biros have gone or stuff like that, or about mice running the world! theyd be phoning the men in white coats for me i think..

    The TV series was brilliant

Anyway, my ex's mum used to make hundreds (literally) of costumes every year for the pantomine at Queensway Ice rink, so she made the jacket with three arms.

The head - well, this was sooooo funny. My ex is an ace model maker, if anyone does any fantasy roll playing games like warhammer or dungeons & dragons, they'll know what I'm talking about. You use 25mm figures (25mm = 6ft). Well he makes masters for those figures to be cast from. So anyway -

He thought it would be important to make the extra head so it looked like him, so the first plan was to make a life mask. We put vaseline on his eyebrows, moustache, eyelashes & hairline & he put a straw up each nostril & I poured dental plaster (quick setting) over his face. Trouble was, the plaster was old, it had gone off & so it didn't set! Yuk, cleaned off the soggy plaster.

So we tried again, same again with the vaseline & a new batch of plaster. Once it had set, we set about getting it off.

The only trouble was, it was stuck to his eyelashes!!! We hadn't used enough vaseline!!! So, as he wanted to keep the plaster mold in tact, he held it (1½Kg of plaster hanging of his eyelashes) whilst I had to reach over & cut his eyelashes with a scalpel!! At this point the cat came in & wanted fussing, so she jumped up on his lap & started rubbing against his hands!!

In the end we just gave up & he broke the mold to get it off his eyelashes.

So then he god a wig head & a blond wig, he sculpted a perfect copy of his face. He drilled through the back of the head to the eye socket & pushed through a small polystyrene ball so it looked like an eyeball. he had to buy false eyelashes for the head (not to replace his own lol) & you should have seen the look on the shop assistant's face as he explained they were for him lol.

He bought an eye patch for one eye, but underneath the eye patch he modelled a gruesome sewn up eye.

It was so good that he won first prize at every fancy dress party or "do" we went to after that lol.

His mum made my costume, I wish we had photographs.

wow that sounds like a really cool costume!! god our fancy dress thing i just got a mate to buy me some wings and i wore normal clubbing clothes! lol.. but it was kind of a relaxed fancy dress code... that must have been an excellent zaphod!!

rofl i bet you were laughing so much about the eyelashes thing!!!! lol i would have taken some pics of that definitely with clods of plaster hanging off his eyelashes, if not the whole thing! lol arent i nasty

oh sod it !!! The radio plays of Hitchikers are the only way to do it... it rocks... I once spent a whole night curled up in bed listening to it..... those were the days.... or nights to be precise... but hey I am a lazy reader... I'd actually read the books and watched the tv series before my sister's ex husband introduced me to the tapes of the original radio series... and I still am hooked on them :P the only decent thing Lee ever did for any of our family !! lol

just finished all 6 books! well there were 5 in the triology and a random one called "young zaphod plays it safe"... which is just a bit odd and doesnt have that much meaning to me, other than a load of by products of designer people has been blasted off to Galactic Sector ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha, basically earth! and that it must be made "perfectly safe". whatever that means..

dont you think mostly harmless kinda ruined it? sort of a bit final, bloody great bird coming in and destroying all of the blue and green sausages!! (if you dont know, dont ask!)

dont those vogons just piss you off?

I'd just like to point out that the radio series really is just fuckin amazing i mean it's soooooo good to listen to and has infinate replayability, no really, we're talking ultra replayability here. The only problem is the ending of it, it leaves it on a cliff hanger.

Which is another strange thing, the radio series, the TV series and the books all go off in different directions, it's really quite weird.

Another weird thing is that the american version censors it in some place when arthur is talking to a woman who as won an award for 'most gratuitous usage of the word 'fuck'' which i think is a damn cool award!! and they replaced it with something totally crap.

The problem with Mostly Harmless is that its ending is such that its almost impossible to write any more because it was so finalising.

One last thing, j9 either you're a super-genius or i'm a super-idiot but the text game of HHG was THE hardest game ever!!!.........EVER!!! i mean did u ever actually complete it?!?! i mean Belgium, man! Belgium!

I'm no genius (I'm not saying you're an idiot here) but you had to make sure that you got every single event in the correct order. If you missed out a single detail, it messed up events much further down the line & meant you couldn't finish.

It was a great game, but when I finished it, it was a disappointment because I had to stop

It ws a long time ago, but where did you get stuck?

When i was on the heart of gold and i was using the improbability generator with the 'brown substance almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea' and i appeared inside my own body and blew up...nice

'twas an addictive game but if u didn't do everything just so you would completely screw up, i hate that

By the way, i have actually messaged BBC but they said that there were no plans for a re-play of HHG, which kinda sucks, but i know em practically word for word now anyway, arn't i pathetic heeheehee ^_^

    42.

The Yanks are supposed to be making a HHG film. Possible Arthur Dents include Hugh Laurie and Jim Carrey. What's the betting it'll have lovely effects but they'll bugger up the thing anyway.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
By the way, if you like HHG (which you obviously do) then I cannot recommend highly enough Douglas Adams' other novels, 'Dirk Gently's holistic detective Agency' and 'The Long Dark Teatime of The Soul' mmmmm
  • Girl-From-MarsGirl-From-Mars Posts: 2,822 Boards Guru
they cant have jim carrey as arthur for god's sake!! the americans messed up the book enough, i SOMEHOW ended up with the american version of it which confused me! dont let them at the film! grr.

ive read long dark teatime of the soul, but not the first one! it was quite good, but i kept not concentrating on it and i hadnt read the first one!

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

hugh laurie would fit so well as arthur dent but lets face it, they probably wont use him cos they'll need some an american lead role to help it sell in america, bastards
