Hi can anyone let me know what it is like as a mature student in uni or those at uni are there many mature students in halls?

I am looking to move away to start uni this sept in Brighton but starting to worry at 22 I know I am not proper old or anything but I am just starting to be a little concerned that it will make things a little harder.

Please let me know what you think cheers!

22 isn't old!! You'll fit in great in uni and in halls, so don't panic!! We have a lot of mature students about halls, and we have a guy in ours that's doin' a masters that I sat up all night with last night and talked the biggest load of crap to, age doesn't matter. And in your classes it's never a problem, no matter what age anyone is! Just go for it!

I second capo2. 22 is nothing! I was good friends with people of all ages at uni, it didn't matter at all.

Try not to worry about it and just go with the flow. It's a bit different atmosphere at uni! :)

God, I hate the term "mature student". It's just a meaningless term that universities use to mean "older than most other students". It's also an invitation from certain quarters for all kinds of jokes about viagra, stairlifts and walking sticks. Thankfully, such jibes seem to come from the minority. Generally, more and more students are 21 or over when they start university nowadays. I think it's a pretty good thing myself. Frankly, after all the tests and exams that you've done up to 18, I think that a break from education is a great thing. Those who take a few years out before going to uni seem to do extremely well as a result.

Your age is only a problem if you make it one. Halls is unlikely to give you problems, although it does depend on what exactly you want to get out of that experience.

good points I think I have just been stressing cuz most of my friends are finishing this year and it kinda seems like I am a little bit late, but yeah i need to chill and focus on bigger things like sorting out my finances before I go!!!!

Not at all SG. The term makes a distinction between those who are mature, have had life experiences and responsibilities etc, it just annoys you because you got older without growing up so your age doesn't make a difference.

22 isn't much of a difference. But you may find the younger students annoying, especially if you've already lived away from home and been independent and they are all going mental with their first bit of freedom.

    thanks!!!!

i have lived out of home but recently had to move back again i will probably be worse then the others as having had freedom from my parents it was so hard getting back into telling them every detail of my life! im starting to feel way more positive cant wait to go now!!!! :)

At 22 you really aren't that much older than a lot of them. I went back at 21 and found that I was actually fairly average in age in the year.

I have to say I found halls a little annoying as being constantly woken up at 4am by fire alarms going off or someone coming knocking on our door drunk was something I thought I'd left long behind. It was just a different attitude really because I'd already been to uni lived the 1st year lifestyle and had gone back with a "I want to work hard" attitude...didn't happen mind you!

But I had friends who's gone at 18 and friends who'd gone back to uni at 30 in my friendship group and we all got on brilliantly and age never really came into it!

It probably depends a bit on what course you do, but who knows?

On mine, there were a fair few "mature students" and they were older than 22.

Mind you I probably just preferred their company because I was older than average anyway due to my birthday and taking a few years before going.
