Xmas TV

Is it just me, or does Xmas TV get worse every year?? And I really hate the Eastenders special and all the other soaps doing their Xmas shows..

Is sloppy 'Titanic' the best the schedulers can come up with? They get enough money from ads and license fees to get some better stuff than that. It's rubbish!

I am going to turn off the telly and hire a stack of vids and DVDs instead. Best vids of the year anybody? Going to start with Fight Club

Very droll Rachael <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"> lmao

I don't actually watch much grown-up TV these days anyway, when the kids are up it's The Disney Channel & the rest of the time I'm on here.

My mate has just transfered It's a wonderful life & Hocus Pocus onto CDs for me because we just bought them on DVD & the effing DVD player's sound has died!!!

So now I can watch them on my PC, while I am here. Good eh?

We will, of course destroy the CDs when we have the facility to watch them on DV again <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">

And radio.
JK Rowlings is so up herself she insists that her precious work would be ruined if broken into parts, and so it can only be broadcast continuously.

Radio 4 12-8:30pm 26/12/00

Her little series is amusing enough, but derivative and stereotype ridden

The books are okay, but the author is believing the hype.

There's going to be a backlash when they go through puberty.

Nah way, I(18) read the book n loved it, my mom loved it so did my dad, think it's an ageless book, not sure what u mean by the author believing the hype, I think she's done well, especially writing two books related to Harry Potter for charity.

I love the Harry Potter books too! I've met the author and she was really nice.

Also, you know the third book called Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, well the Azkaban thing is named after my english teacher! We went on a school trip thing to meet JK Rowling when the first book came out, and when she was signing our books she said she was going to use my teachers name in something because it was unusual and she liked it! Just thought I'd tell you that hehe

I think my favourite films of the moment - though not from this year - are probably (in no particular order):

Long Green Mile
Fight Club though I don't think it's as good as some people made out, and not as good as...
The Usual Suspects what a classic <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">
The Matrix
Face Off
Pleasantville
Blade Runner
Total Recall
Life of Brian
Alien, Aliens
Empire Strikes Back (but not available on DVD, damn GL)
That one with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez from a couple of years back, is it 'Out of Sight'? Can't remember.
Hamlet, the long one with Kenneth Branagh, but that's just cos I love the play and it's a complete version, with a couple of good performances.
Dusk till Dawn is my favourite B-movie, very silly and fun.
Devil's Advocate really freaked me out.

Plus loads of others which I'll put up when I think of them, if this is still going.

N yeah it is suitable for kids J9.. it's like one of th best books written in recent times.
• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
yep definitely suitable for kids J9, they'll love it! i think my teacher should ask for royalties too, she'd get loads !! She was a horrible teacher though, so I dont really care hehe. JK Rowling also said she was going to use my mates name (Zeenat) so I'm looking out for that in her next book! hehe

Yes, I'd say the first 3 are suitable, especially for the 8. I can't think of anything that would be bad for a 5.

The author has said there will be a death in a later book, and that the situations will be realistic for HP's age.

Apart from the stereotypical sexism and racism it is fine.

Haven't read number 4 yet - she just isn't good enough for me to buy a hardback.

• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Number 4????

that isnt out yet.... is it?
• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Back on topic....

I was wrong about the telly on the 27th Dec. Two specials: The Last Fast Show Ever, and League of Gentlemen.

But Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day are still shite for telly!!

Shall I hire Gladiator? Anyone seen it yet?
• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
If you mean Pleasantville Daze, then I duuno, but it's been out at the cinema for ages.

Gladiator's good, maybe I should have had that on my list. Well worth seeing.

No, there's the one with a train on the cover (in which a teacher is revealed to be in league with Voldemort), the one with Ron's dad's car on the cover (in which a teacher is revealed to be a bullshot artist) and the one with a gryph?n (in which a teacher is revealed to be a lunatic). I've not read the gibblet of fire yet, so I can't remember he cover (or comment on what a teacher is revealed to be)

I probably just messed the whole quote thing up, but anyway... Carraige you just spoiled the books for anyone who hasn't read them!! If they havent read them well now they know whats happened. There are 4 Harry Potter books arent there ? Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ?

Just noticed that LA Confidential is on the telly too. Maybe it's not so bad after all. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif">

OK, it's mostly crap, though. Will be hiring lots of vids and watching The Matrix on DVD.

Going to hire:
Gladiator
Pleasantville
and whatever else looks good in the vid shop.

I didn't think I've given anything important away - in the first it was a question of who, in the second it was known from the start and the third is cryptic and not especially important

the forth is the one with a dragon on the cover, in which a teacher is revealed to have an undesirable racial background.

j9 - I'd read this one through before reading it to your lit-luns. It might make an interesting lead into those awkward topics - pointless death, torture, government corruption, fragility of life, manipulation by the media, state sanctioned murder and pragmatic pardons. Also superficial attraction and affection.

Definately not a smarties award winner, but a very good read.

Thankfully a strong attempt to move away from the formula of the 3 previous books.

slightly more plot holes than usual, new abilities that make the older stories more questionable (why platform 9.75 when there are portkeys?)

book 3 only covers the death penalty and state sanctioned torture.
