Council tax

Wasn't quite sure which forum this should go in, as it's a student issue too but went for this one. My question is...do students have to pay council tax when moving into rented property? Or are they exempt?

There's a handy government site that explains the rules for student exemptions.

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/LifeAtUniversityOrCollege/DG_071488

    Hope that helps.

As long as you have a council tax exemption certificate from your place of education then you just send that off to the council and it makes you exempt. Any none students in the property will have to pay though if there are going to be any.

make sure you have a certificate though, and that your landlord actually sends it to the council

we got a summons through the post! :grump:

Ah good to hear, one less expense, but how do I get hold of a certificate then?

It's not the landlord's responsibility to notify the council that you are a student. It's your responsibility to do it.

You get an exemption certificate from your place of study.

our landlord took the certificate from us and informed us they would be sorting it - in that instance they have taken on the responsibilty, therefore it was their responsibilty.

Aye, in that instance its fine, but its not the usual way of doing things.

Some people only realise they have to do it when the summons arrives!
