the problem rests with the border and immigration agency. i don't see why the police cannot deal with illegal immigrants who are criminals by the same measures as those who are here legally, granting bail poses a problem obviously, but they should be passed onto BIA with proper handling measures in place to ensure they are not lost to the system.

The BIA should be helping, but they aren't. "Tell them to make their own way to the imigration centre" is a message i've heard a few times now.
When someone has been arrested just for being an illegal immigrant then they have to be released. If they're dealt with for another offence then fine, the police can deal with it.
Depends. If there's a genuine belief that someone will skip bail we can either make them give us a surety payment, or apply for remand.
Both them work a hell of a lot better than asking them to make their own way to Liverpool (which incidentally is the closest BIA centre to us and we're a fair distance away.)
Those convicted of the most serious crimes are getting deported, record numbers in fact, but the BIA can't be everywhere all the time. They don't have enough time or staff.
Sadly, though, the BIA are also too busy deporting people attched to kidney dialysis to bother deporting criminals. Presumably the terminally ill are better for their figures 'cause they can't run away.
