(being morally high and mighty) if i earned something, i would give some of it to charity. as i don't i give my time instead. i do think others should do the same, but i wouldn't force my opinion on others.
just as long as you feel your conscience is clear, you don't need to worry
However, I have plenty of time for traditional socialists, the ones who practice what they preach, the ones who genuinely care about their fellow man, not where the next brown paper envelope is coming from. The people who work in investment banks or other posts where they make considerable amounts of money should, in my view, give something back. Society has rewarded them extremely well with wealth and success - the least they should do is give something back, by helping those who are less fortunate. People who succeed in business do that already, in a sense. The management at a successful company will have created jobs, will be making money, will be paying taxes. Hence why people who take management jobs in failing companies and transform them into successes should be rewarded very highly. However, failure should be punished. Just throw them out without a second's thought. (if you brought some of this kind of thinking into the public sector, we might actually get something done, but that's a debate for another day)
If someone is rich, and uses their wealth sensibly, people do not resent it. Look at Bill Gates, for example. He's a billionaire, and nobody doubts that he deserves his money. He also does considerable amounts of work for charity. Or look closer at home to Prince Charles. Although he gets criticised simply because of who he is, look at all he has done for charity. Nobody thinks his record is anything but impeccable. No, it's smug tossers like Bono from U2 we don't like - people who tell us to pay Gift Aid on charitable donations, this when he has his money in Switzerland or somewhere like that...
"Bill Gates is a greedy, rotten, hypocritical, money grubbing criminal. He lied, cheated and stole his way to the top and now he's trying to steal from us" - www.alipac.us
"If you've ever wondered whether Bill Gates is a greedy blood sucking pig - consider this: his solution fails in almost every way to meet the need Negroponte is attempting to meet, but he's stop at nothing to deprive 3rd world countries of Negroponte's design just so he can try to hook the 3rd world on Windows using a complete kludge." - www.zdnet.com
Plenty more where that came from! Warren Buffet has given his entire fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and still gets called a greedy / selfish cunt all day.
Tbh... Giving to charity doesn't automatically give you a pass to be righteous... However much people shout out about it.
What a lot of these people give to charity, they can easily afford.
