Socialists saying I'm greedy/selfish cos of my job

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Hi everyone. Sorry I just really need to vent/let off steam, and would also appreciate your opinions.

I'm an investment banker. One of those "high flyers" in the city who makes loads of money, big bonuses etc. Not particularly because I'm hugely money-grabbing and materialistic, but because I'm naturally good at maths, economics, finance so the job I have seems to be an ideal fit for what I do.

Anyway, I am fed up of non-stop getting flak, stick, abuse just based on my job. If I meet people at pubs, bars, clubs etc and they ask what my job is, it will most of the time be treated with a typical abusive comment like "Oh so you're obsessed with making as much money as possible then?", "It's thanks to people like you that Africans are starving, why don't you give all that money to charity, don't you have a social conscience?", "Why would anyone want to do something like that when you can be positively contributing to social justice?" etc etc. Yes I could just lie about my job but I don't feel comfortable doing that.

Also I get featured now and then in financial newspapers, Bloomberg TV and stuff, and straight after I get quite a bit of hate-mail from socialists saying how greedy people like me are and how we should be giving all our money to Africa etc.

What pisses me off in particular is how hypocritical everyone is. I give way more to charity than some socialist, who themselves may spend more needlessly on designer clothes / drugs / their PC when others have nothing.

Why should I constantly be made to feel guilt-tripped just because I got a well-paying job?

To be honest even though I'm not hugely driven by money yes I do love having lots of it to enjoy with things like nice holidays and cars. I'm made to feel guilty about this when there are indeed people starving and stuff.. but how come nobody has a go at popstars, celebrities, footballers who make way more? And how come it's fine for someone earning like £20k to enjoy the occasional luxury but when I do it's seen as greedy?

Any thoughts? Like I said I'm not comfortable lying about my job to shake off flak. I just want a simple happy comfortable life without having to deal with abuse and crap non-stop, is that too much to ask?

Thanks

Comments like those usually arise from jealousy. You've just got to try and ignore them...if you know that you give to charity and you're not going round flaunting how much more cash you have than others then just enjoy doing a job that you like and enjoy the money that that brings. I know it's easier said than done.

Off topic you reminded me that Ricardo seemed to have been quiet for sometime and I wondered what had happened - why did he get banned? What did I miss?

    It's quite sad really.

Do you reckon he's a bit lonely or something?

I think he's just a bit thick. Seriously, intelligent maybe - but no common sense.

He compared himself to fucking Patrick Bateman. If you see a bloke running around Canary Wharf in Hitecs and a chainsaw - lucky you! You've got interest from Jomery/Ricardo/Weirdo..

    Hello Jomery

I'd just like to add that giving money to charity or complaining about rich people has fuck all to do with socialism.

Why do these people seem to get frills telling people how much they make and how much of a 'high flyer' they are?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Cos there a cunt.

Come on guys I think you're being quite harsh.

Reason people judge you would be because they may be jealous or feel it's unfair you get paid a lot when the work you do may not be 'harder' or more valuable but just makes more money for big companies. I know this is a feeling with a lot of med students I know.

The problem is that the entire banking industry is set up to make as much money as possible, seemingly in the least ethical way possible. Which is why you have cunt bank managers slapping £100 of bank charges on to someone who gets £50 a qweek income support. It is why you have cunt bank management lending thousands to someone who earns £100 a week and then driving them to suicide when they can't pay it back.

You, and all your banking chums, are self-centred greedy fucks. I honestly don't know how you manage to sleep at night, I'd be fucking ashamed to work in that industry knowing what it does to people.

I don't think you should have to give your salary to charity but I think you should consider where your salary comes from. It comes directly from grinding the faces of the poor and disadvantaged into the fucking dirt.

So fuck off with your self-centred whingeing. It would be tragic if you and your mate got sent down for ten years for GBH with intent, wouldn't it?

I do seriously hope when the mod's get in tomorrow this is Ricardo reinventing himself...I have my suspicions it isn't though. Come on guys lighten up...we're meant to be somewhere people can come to get advice on their problems etc, not somewhere that leaps down the throat of someone who's new and puts them off ever coming back again just because of the industry they work in.

Why is it that you think that celebs and pro footballers don't get flack? I reckon they get quite a bit of flack. I reckon, actually, that they'd generally get more flack than you would, because theirs is a more public lifestyle. If you don't want to, you don't have to disclose how much you earn at all, and, yet, in another thread on this site, you willingly did just that. You could avoid all your flack by just not saying how much you earn. A pro-footballer or an A-list celeb doesn't have that option, because everyone already knows they earn a packet.

That said, you don't have to lie about anything either. But, frankly, there are people who are rich and likeable, and there are people who are rich and unlikeable. You might just fall into the second group.

Also whilst I am at it, maybe it's just your attitude that stinks. I mean, what the fuck is your thread title about "socialists saying you are greedy"? What's that about? Why do you have a dig at people even in your thread title which is your opening to a thread that is intended to gain sympathy for your position. Jesus Christ man, you may be rich but I think you missed out on the classes where they teach you about diplomacy and getting people on side.

Haway, this guy's been here two minutes and he's rubbed his money in our face and then whinged on about how everyone hates him for rubbing his money in their face.

Nicest thing that could happen to fucks like him is a stock market crash.

This was his first post, and then he answered another thread with some proof of figures to show what was being asked was possible. Yes his title to this thread could have been more diplomatic, but thats no reason to accuse him of being someone else and having a complete go at him.

    That much is true.

However, the answer to the guy's "problem" is surely within his own grasp. If he doesn't want "socialists" having a go at him, then all he needs to do is quit bragging.

On his defence (as I'm not convinced it's Ricardo) if you ask someone what his job is and they reply, it's not bragging.

Err, what? The bank I work for doesn't even do high street banking here - so nobody gets overdraft charges. Not all investment banks do personal / high street / retail banking you know. There is a big difference between "retail banking" (high street banks - personal accounts for everyone) and "investment banking" (dealing with large corporations and huge clients - debt/equity financing, mergers, leveraged finance etc). I have nothing whatsoever to do with people getting fees for exceeding their overdraft limit. And the job I do in the bank (economist / analyst) doesn't whatsoever hurt/affect anyone. Get your facts right before tarring anyone who works in banking/finance with the same brush, thinking anyone who works in an investment bank has something to do with overdraft fees, it makes you look utterly ignorant.
