If i want to quote from an article, but the quotation is actually a quotation that the author has quoted from another article, do i reference the article that i've read, or the original article that the author quoted from??

We were always told to quote the source we got it from. (IE not the original)

If you're being totally honest (and can't get hold of the original text) write:
Joe Bloggs, as cited by A.N. Other, Book Title, (Place of publication, date) p. 100.

But try and get hold of the original if you can - might help you with the background etc.
