What sort of watch do you have?

Don't know where to put this...so I decided to put it here (I figured that Watch is linked to lifestyle and linked to Entertainment).

Yesterday, I got myself a new watch, and I'm loving it a lot.

I'm just wondering what most people have out there. And let's say you have 400 pounds, what watch would you get with that money?

I've got a Lorus, which has served me well for many years.

If I had £400 to spend on a watch, I'd get another £25 Lorus and spend the rest on something that's actually worth £400.

    Get a grip. <IMG alt="image" SRC="tongue.gif" border="0">

If you put it like this, then nothing (physical material) in this world would cost 400 pounds. (since everything that we have is made by raw material of some sort, that are free to us all.)

If you haven't notice, what you do pay for is the craftsmanship, the design, the research, manufaturing cost, advertising...etc. And I agree, that your watch only cost 25 pounds...if that at all.

And yes, there are watches that cost 400 pounds easily. So, back to the question, what would you get?

And I suppose that a good watch is only good if it's in the hand of someone how appreciate Time, design and craftsmanship.

Shut up. I want a watch to tell the time. That's it. Bollocks to craftsmanship and design.

    I'd rather get a car.

You're obviously an expert. What would you get?

I currently have a Rado Xeramo, reason being is the hard/scratchproof material that Rado watches use (sapphire crystals for the face, hightech ceramics for the casing.), it's design/appearance is quite different from most watches.

The ceramics are similar to what Mercedes and BMW use for their engine, and for space shuttles (re-entering earth's atmosphere). Hardwearing, lightweight and can stand up to extreme heat.

The face/crystal is quite common amoung good watches because of it's scratchproof characteristic.

You can check out other Rado watches at it's website.

Another watch that I looked at was the Seiko Kinetic Auto Relay, titanium casing (lightweight, but not as strong as high quality stainless steal).

OK, but how many times have you re-entered the earth's atmosphere whilst wearing your posh watch? Have you ever put your arm in a Mercedes engine?

What's the point in spending £400 on a watch that can do all that when you could get a cheapo watch and spend the rest on something better.

How about a car, or a nice holiday, or several nice meals, or a gift for someone special?

Sure they're all 'materialistic' but a watch is just a watch. You can't seriously be trying to tell me that your watch gives you information in a better way than mine. Time is time however much it costs.

You have your Rado. Use it checking how late the bus is, while I drive past with my cheap Lorus. Snob. <IMG alt="image" SRC="tongue.gif" border="0">

Totally agree with Kentish on this one. Theres no way I'd spend £400 on a watch. The only thing I need a watch for is to tell me what time it is and when buying a new one I only look for a nice one that matches whatever outfit I'm gonna wear!
Whats the point of paying for all that space age stuff when you are never gonna use it?

The watch I wear everyday was £40 from Next and if I had £400 to spend on a watch I'd spend no more than £50 on the watch and the other £350 on a holiday! <IMG alt="image" SRC="tongue.gif" border="0">

If telling the time is all you need a watch to do (as you've stated)...Why don't you get rid of the watch you already have and try reading the time off your mobile (assuming you already have one)? Assuming your mobile isn't a brick-size phone, you can have your mobile in your pocket, and just take it out whenever you need the time. Similar to taking your wrist in front of you (other than the fact that you'll need a bit more finger coordinations and about to pick a phone up).

The point is, a watch maybe be just a watch (usually when you are not materialistic, want to save money, have no excess income...etc), but telling time isn't the only thing they do. I'm sure that as part of the Design Requirement for a proper-ish watch, it includes, comfort, accurate time within certain error range, appearance, durability...and cost.

Maybe I'm not at the correct forum, in fact, I don't think I am, where people appreciate watches (knowing the history, knowing the work that had gone into it). I think I need to find someone with some taste in watches.

If you haven't notice, my original question is similar to asking: Which speaker system would you get (Bose or Bang&Olufsen) if you have 5000 pounds. (This is a "If" question). I assume you guys have taste in audio systems if not watches, you wouldn't go and get a 100 pounds hi-fi that would just play music, would you? Or would you? Tell me that you would at least go for something more decent.

Materialistic, I am, I know that and I admit to it. But aren't we all to a certain degree? I mean, it is because people like us that's always want something better, something newer, which then demand another small step in technology. If everything around us is only constructed based on "Need" (a strong word, something you can't live without), then way was the XJ-220 got built? Or why have optical mouse when the old (with ball inside) mouse was fully functional for what it's supposed to do.

I've got a Nokia one and it comes with a mobile phone. Suits a person like me fine seeing that I only use it to tell the time.

    $400 pounds.. No way I'd be spending it on a watch! <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0">

I don't wear a watch as I don't want the constraints of man made "time" attached to my body. I check my phone if I need to know, I don't rule my life by time too much. £400 in my opinion I would rather go on holiday but people can spend their money how they like. I got my b/f a £100 engraved watch as a special present and it was worth it as it is a personal gift which will last many years.

My mums got a Rolex and her boyfriends got a Tag (he's got too much money)... I've got a piece of shit titanium effort for £65 quid and the straps broke (I need to get it fixed).
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
It is worth having a dappa don watch. For my 18th I got a nice £600 Tag from my parents with my initials engraved on it and I was chuffed with it.

I do have a mobile phone but I keep it in my bag so it is easier to just look at my wrist for the time rather than open my bag and take my phone out and if I'm in a club then I dont have my phone with me at all. Suppose its easier for guys with pockets but with my clubbing wear I generally don't have anywhere to put a mobile phone!

The point you make about speakers/entertainment systems doesn't stand cos I spend a lot of time listening to music and its something I do for enjoyment so obviously I'd spend a bit more money on a decent system but to a limit and I wouldn't spend over £1000 nevermind £5000 just like I'm not going to spend a fortune on something I'm only going to glance at once or twice a day to make sure I'm not late for something!
It just proves some people have more money than sense!
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
The point about entertainment systems does stand, believe it or not. You said it yourself, that you would spend a bit more on speakers and stuff because you like them to a certain degree, right?

So, for people who like watches, they would as well, spend a bit more on watches.

"That much money", the "much" is only relative to how much you have AND how much you like/love watches (conditional AND). So, for some people that have a lot of money (the "lot" here is relative to what I think is a lot, and is not an absolute value), they might spend up to £20,000 pounds on a watch, who knows. So believe me, some people will spend that much, and it got nothing to do with common sense since love for an entity can not compare with common sense in one's point of view (similar to the love you have for a person. e.g. Love doesn't have to have a explain-able reason for it to exist). (did that make any sense to you at all?)

Ah, Tag, I think I like them as well, but there's one problem for me. Most European male watches seem to have fairly big face (the watch itself). My wrist is tiny compare to most British guys over here, if Tag ever design a great watch with a smaller face (and when I have the money), I'll probably give it a go. For now, I do enjoy my Rado Xeramo...maybe in a year time, I'll get another watch.

Has anyone in here managed to own a Breitling watch yet? That's the watch I'm hoping to have...but it costs too much for now (since I'm still a student).

Someone mentioned Rolex. Is it a mechanical one or a Quartz? Quartz are more accurate, but mechanical watches worth more amoung the collectors.

Chatbox, you seem to have some kind of watch fetish! Isn't there a message board for people like you? What watch would your ideal woman be wearing? Do you wank over the argos catalogue watches section? What about clocks then?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
There's no need for you to get rude and stuff just because you disagree with my point of view (or can't see what my view is).

Do keep an open mind to this matter, you'll grow more that way (in your mind).

You do know that being rude in such a way that you were, is usually because you're incapable of expressing your feelings, or lack of words to use, or more simply put - a lack of high degree of intelligent in certain area.

Similar to any well education people. They don't get into physical fights, they don't swear, but will, if needed, argue about their point and getting the idea across in proper manner.

    Chatbox

FYI: Argos, may, from time to time have good products, but mostly they're low end products that don't worth the bother. Or better put, the products are functional for the purpose they designed for, but lack a touch of class and design and sense of luxury. And so, I don't even have the cataloge around.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
You are the one that cannot accept that other people have better things to spend their money on! I was just having a joke, I wasn't aware that supposedly "well education" (I think you meant to write "well educated, a bit ironic, no?) people are not allowed to take the piss!

Get a life! Going on about well educated people when your sentences aren't even properly constructed! Examples: "low end products that don't worth the bother", "getting the idea across in proper manner", etc etc etc....Try showing that you are well educated yourself before slagging others off. Go away and wank over your littlewoods catalogue.

Good point, I do admit that my English does need a lot of improvement...It is rather embarressing if you ask me. :-)

Can "English is my second language" be an excuse? Or maybe I should have spent the money on extra English lessons. Anyway, I would say that my English is conversational, after all, you did managed to get what I mean (hopefully without any major problem with reconstructing the wordings).

Maybe I've been in Manchester for too long. I think it's time to go back to Essex.

Just a question: How would you rephrase this "low end products that don't worth the bother", to something better/proper?

Would this be better: Wouldn't waste my time and money on lowend products.

Any better or not? Um...I think I do need someone to guide me a bit here. Help?

I didn't know English was your second language but still, lighten up and take a joke! "Low-end" doesn't really mean anything, I know what you are trying to say, probably "low quality" would be a better way of saying it.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I'm a software engineering student. The phrase/wording "low end" is what we used to describe specifications/quality/capability of computers (both hardware and software)...that's why I thought I could have used it here. But then, maybe not. Low quality would probably have been a better choice of words here I guess.

Hey, KT, thanks for the help.
You know what, sometimes I do like arguements, because they can boost the understanding between two or more people...I'm beginning to like you.

I have a timex watch that cost me £20 it tells the time day and night, glows so i can see it. Works in the wet and is scratch resistant. What more do i need?!

An expensive watch would be nice but is not likely to do anymore for me! Cars, sound systems etc.. all have differences, i'd spend alot on a quality sound system if i could as i appreciate cystal clarity. I'd buy an audi if i could, cause i'd like to be able to drive along in comfort, without hearing funny noises and without praying nothing will drop off.

I have a compact phone that is practical, i can ring people on it and it doesn't take up much room. What i'm getting at is a watch's function is to tell the time, there's no difference in the time telling ability between watches.

Expensive watches are more status symbals than anything else.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Mine is made by Fossil. I don't know how much it cost as it was given to me by my dad for my 18th. Therefore the cost is irrelivent really.

It is entirely a question of priorities and relativity. I agree with Chatbox that an academic will enjoy the debate without resorting to violence or name calling.

However, I would disagree in terms of watch. If you wish to have a watch for £400, you are more than welcome to do so. Don't think that others do not appreciate it's crafsmanship or aesthetic value. It's just that some of us arrange our needs and wants in a different hierarchy. I wouldn't have a watch for £400. I wouldn't have speakers for £5000. The music does not sound any better. And, if I want perfect quality, then I'll go and spend the money on lessons, so I can play it. I would take your £5000 speakers, sell them, and go to Iceland. I want experiences, not material possessions, because your memories are yours. They can never be taken away from you. You cannot be mugges of your memories. A burglar cannot break in and steal them.

I acknowledge that you are a more skilled linguist than I. I am sure that you're probably much cleverer than me. Please do not question my education. Or my standards. That's beyond the pale. Status focussed people often perceive themselves as "gentlemen". You earn that title. You don't buy it.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Well I do have a expensive ish sound system.... but that's cos I spend a lot of time listening to it.

I have a nice looking ripcurl watch that I used to wera when looking smart (battery needs changing). So at the moment I am wearing a £200 watch.... before you criticize me I bought it for a specific purpose - mountaineering. It is a Suunto Advizor wristtop computer, with Compass *time!*, Barometric pressure, Altitude, Heart rate monitoring and logging for all these functions, therefore I believe it was worth it at £200.

My parent bought me an official tag heur watch, but cos it looks so expensive and probably is so expensive i just dont wear it in case i damage it!

I just stick to my trusty sekonda watch. that has served me for a year and a half, i have worn my tag watch twice in 3 and a half years. got i on my 16th birthday!
