I work in Central London where, like most major cities, there is far too much homelessness, poverty, suffering and unhappiness. This makes me especially nauseas considering that we have the means to put men on the moon, transplant ears onto mice, leave thousands of office blocks uninhabited and construct the biggest Ferris wheel in the world so we that we can simply have a good view of the City etc. This in mind, i'm often contemplating ideas which could help solve the problem, even a little effort could be a great help to someone.
While walking along the Thames today it was very apparent how many delivery couriers got about on bicycles. Now, I have an old mountain bike that I bought some years ago with the intention of getting fit and seeing the countryside. I'm sure that like a lot of you, my bike has been in the garage for some years gathering dust and rust before I'd no doubt throw it out.
So i think, could I give this bike to somebody who could make good use of it? I suppose that they could simply sell it OR...Maybe they could start couriering themselves and start to earn a little cash? How easy is couriering to get into? Maybe then, slowly but surely, they could get enough cash together to start to get their lives together? You wouldn't need any particular skill, except to know your way around town and obviously be able to ride a bike.
Then I start to wonder how many old mountain bikes are rotting away in sheds, bought by rmiddle class suburban folk and forgotten about and whether they could be put to good use?
I'm serious and I'm going to contact Shelter or someone similar to get a reality check on this idea as i'm full of good intention but do need a little practical, objective advice so I thought i'd see what you lot thought.
Objective criticism, advice, encouragement or any comments please? Come to think of it any other ideas?

Sounds a good idea. I agree with you organising it with the help of a reputable organisation. This way you can make sure that the people use the bikes for what they were intended. I know a lot of people on the streets are actually honest folk but at the same time there are a few around that would just sell the bike for drugs and booze.

    Good luck!

What makes you think that good, honest people would give their bike away to some druggy who would only abuse it? I have a bike which I no longer use but I would much rather have it as an ornament that an object that will only be used to peddle a drug habit rather than peddle round the city. It will only cause to terrorise the city, I mean can you imagine the city full of jakeys speeding about town stealing and causing a nuisance because I can and I don't like that thought one bit. As your heart seems to be in the right place and your brain in the wrong you could take an alternative course of action. Instead of giving the bycycle away, why don't you collect bicycles that people no longer use nor want and sell them and give the cash to a charity whose primary objective to help the homeless in London? Or if the response to this appeal is not too great you could always get back on your bike again and perform a sponsored cycle and give all proceeds to a worthy charity, I am sure there are plenty of charities that will give you superb backing!
